Title: Officials Security...Can someone please confirm or deny
Post by: Coby on October 01, 2012, 11:02:06 AM
I am coping this from an email that was just sent out.  Can anyone else in the law enforcement industry confirm this?  Not trying to scare anyone and if someone can prove this is a hoax I will remove it.

Message From Tommy Moore - Executive Secretary

It has been reported to me that the Harris County Sheriff Department has receieved a memo, that because of the publicity associated with the "NFL Replacment Referees", gangs are now calling for hits on Officials as a gang iniation ritual.

Please travel main roads, do not wear your stripped shirt except in safe areas, and travel together when you can. Be careful leaving parking lots and stay alert to what is going on around you.

I dont know how serious this is, but we need to take it as serious. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.

Pass it on.

Our agency (mid-sized PD) has had no such reports.  We do constantly see reports on the web where gangs are targeting _____________ (fill in the blank).  This is probably the most current version of the 'initiation target' spoof.

With that said, the recommendations to follow in the middle paragraph are spot-on for anyone, including officials.

I'm glad Amarillo has cows instead of gangs. :P

I don't know. Gangs of cows... I think it would be udderly terrifying if they tries to pick a beef with me. You have to figure they would beat me to hamburger and grind me into the dust.
I could go on, but I'm suddenly quite hungry.

It's not all glitz and glamour in the big city.

Yep, for many years now there have been all kinds of "reports" about the "latest and greatest" gang initiation ritual.  Everything from gangs targeting women in Wal-Mart parking lots, to knocking on random doors and shooting whomever answers the door, to posing as stranded motorists to then kill whomever stops to help them, etc etc etc.    This is probably the next in the series of bogus reports.

Former colleagues i checked with have no knowledge of this.  (And if it were true, there is no way it could have been kept out of the public eye).

Those gangs which do include murder or assault as part of the inititation process typicaly identify victims who are members of rival gangs or people who are perceived to have wronged the gang (informants, ex's, etc).  They do not want to "waste" a hit on something as unimportant as a football official.
