Fan Reaction?
« on: December 15, 2016, 01:27:58 PM »
I just notice the fan reaction summary on my profile.

I am curious is there a way to see what particular posts generated a fan reactions?

No, there is not.  That feature of the board doesn't go that in-depth.

I guess it's sorta' like fan reaction in the real world :). Sometimes they BOO >:( the minute you make a call that goes against their team, and sometimes they have to think about it for awhile before they BOO >:( >:(.Unlike our forum, you can usually rest assured that when they  pHiNzuPCHEER they are not cheering for us.

Several years ago our crew was leaving the field after a hotly contested playoff game when some player's grandmother approached us and yelled : "GIT SOME GLASSES, GIT SOME F%#@&*% GLASSES >:(!" Three of our crew were wearing glasses, the umpire sNiCkErS and I were not.  ^talk He and I looked at each other and sadly agreed that she must have been talking to only us....

I saw a coach at a basketball game once tell an official to get STRONGER glasses.  A whistle and a technical foul call quickly followed.

Don't worry about the "fan reaction"!  This forum is, for the most part, a straight-forward, free-thinking, and tell-it-like-you-see-it group.  If you feel you have a supportable opinion, bring it on; but do your homework.  There are sharp folks on here who WILL call you out!  It's great fun and an excellent learning experience.... tiphat: tiphat:

In Florida the cop escorting you leaves to explain to granny that she can shut up or have someone come pick her up at the station. Besides, that's no way for a LADY to talk.

I'm not an official, and I do not profess to know NCAA rules. I ask questions simply because I try to get a better insight into what it is like to be an official. BTW I have a lot of respect for officials. I hope, and believe, that you really try to be impartial.

Perhaps it shouldn't, but it bothers me when I see a negative fan reaction without an explanation. If you don't like something someone posts how about replying to the post and tell them what you do not like about the post. The interpretation that it is just a "boo" does not help me in improving my posts. Did I ask a question that had been previously answered in another post? Did I do a poor job of explaining my question? Do you disagree with me......this would be difficult since I ask questions to learn, and certainly would never try to criticize posts.

Keeping track of +/- without any explanation makes me much less likely to post to this site. I want to add to the value of the site. If I ask stupid questions simply because I am not an official please let me know why you do not like my post. If you are an official you should be willing to tell a poster why you made the decision to hit the +/- key. As a waning football fan I have NEVER booed an official or for that matter a player for any team. I would never hit the "-" key without being man enough to explain why I 'booed" someone's post. I try to learn, not criticize.

When I resumed participation on this site, I quickly received a large number of “boos”, with only a few “cheers.”  I was puzzled, but, I didn’t let it run me off, and I never will.
I have made a more concerted effort to be tactful with my comments, but I will still express what I believe to be true, correct, and officiatingly righteous.

I would say to everyone:  Don’t let the fan reaction discourage your participation.  Just ignore it (as I do the coaches evaluations 😀).  Keep sharing your questions and thoughts.  They only help us all.

For what it is worth, I have never participated in the fan reaction feature of this site.

I believe that the +/- -- cheer / boo function is cumulative -- and not tied to a specific post.  So, if you have ever been cheered, it follows your name around on this site, regardless of which topic you are in, or which question you have posted on.

I use the feature very occasionally.  I only Boo if a person is disrespectful to another participant or professes a disdain for the rulemakers (far as I know they work hard just like officials to make the game better).  Pretty sure neither one of those make us better officials. On the other hand, I can appreciate a well thought out/worded response (think verbal judo) or someone who can make a bunch of participants think.  For those, I give a cheer.  When I see my scores, I assume (rightly or not) that others have a good logic (okay I know there are one or two haters but I can live with that).  I appreciate a cheer (result of hard work possibly) and I go dig out my rule and verbal judo books if I get a negative response.  I figure they both make me better.
