If an offensive player takes a shot on goal (on target as well) and it glances off a defensive player (who didn't attempt to strike the ball) is it counted as an "own goal"?  Either way there was no way the keeper could have stopped the shot.

Thanks,

Not really the referee's problem, and to be honest I don't think there is an actual definition of what constitutes and 'own goal', but your description definitely does not sound like anything that could be classed as such. If it had been missing the goal, yes, if it had been deflected away from the waiting 'keeper the probably, but no way in the above description.

Thanks for the reply...didn't mean to imply that it was the ref's problem.  Didn't even cross my mind...just trying to get it right for the team stats.

Thanks again,

A kick that is struck by an attacking player yet glances off an opponent and enters into the goal is customairily considered a goal credited to the attacking player who struck the ball.

Own goals are usually attributed to a defending player making a play on the ball, such as clearing, yet the ball enters into the goal as a result of their touch.

Semantics; they are important!

Now if the ball is deflected by a team member in the form of a header or obvious kick or action to change the flight of the ball, then it is the team member's goal and not the kicker. Another scenario would be if the kicker is kicking a corner kick or another set piece and kicks the ball in front of the goal in order for one of there team mates to kick or head the ball in but instead the opposing player tries to head the ball away from the goal but ends up going in, then that would be an own goal score.

Generally, a ball that should have been controlled by a defensive players is misplayed and goes into his own goal, its an OWN GOAL; this even applies to the goal keeper.   A lot depends on the skill level of the players.

Its a matter of who gets credit, or discredit, for the goal, the score counts.
