UNS Cond/TD Wiped out?
« on: November 19, 2011, 09:01:38 PM »
What do you think? You can pull a TD off the board for UNS because of an act by a player who is not the ball carrier. Does this qualify? Ball carrier carries it into the EZ, blocker running with him high-steps in.

Technically I would say yes, but I've seen this in a normal run of highlights and I did not noticed.
Frankly I do not think that that is enough showboating to take a TD away.
I support the no call on field.

Spontaneous celebration - not bringing attention to himself.  No flag.

absolutely not

he simply over strides....Hell most sprinters use this glide/overstride to actually slow down or ease up.

this would fall under the category of "Looking for something to call"

if the ball carrier did this, it would be a flag. As it was not the ball carrier, I wouldn't consider this a flag.

I agree with the conclusion of No Call but not with the reasoning.  This kid is NOT simply overstriding in order to slow down or ease up.  He's showboating.  He's not taunting and it's not the ball carrier so I'm not "looking for something" by making the call.

I've only seen a few LSU games this year but #7(Mathieu?) seems to often play on the dangerous side of the rules.  In the Alabama game, he blatantly closelined Kirkpatrick (that call was made) and sent him out for a large portion of the game.  He's (Mathieu) quite talented but IMO seems to be a bit of a showoff.

In answer to your question about a TD being taken off the board, yes it can. In this play, maybe not, but it was mentioned this preseason.
The scenario discussed by the powers of be was hit on a player causing a fumble that was returned by the defense and the guy who hit the player stood over him taunting him as his teammate ran it back for the TD.

Why is Mathieu in the middle of everything? He did the highstepping in this clip and in their championship game today, he tosses the ball to the H on his punt return (probably before the ball crossed the GL).   hEaDbAnG I wish replay would have noticed it and it would have been a touchback. He needs to be reigned in by his coaches some.

My understanding is that unsportsmanlike conduct conducted by a player while the ball is live is a spot foul (much like a personal foul committed by another player well behind the ball carrier).  Penalty is enforced from the spot.

It is not accurate to simply say that UNS penalties are enforced from the spot of the foul; it may not be. Unsportsmanlike conduct penalties follow Basic Spot enforcement rules, so the actual enforcement spot varies according to the type of play, and the locational relationship of the spot of the foul to the Basic Spot. Yes, when such a live-ball foul occurs during a TD run, the Basic Spot is the end of the run, which is the opponent's goal line. The 3-and-1 principal is then applied at the Basic Spot. If the spot of the foul is behind the Basic Spot, then the penalty is enforced at the spot of the foul. On a TD run, that will probably be 99.9999% of the time. But, a live-ball UNS foul by the scoring team in the opponent's end zone would be enforced at the goal line, and there are other possible situations in which the penalty might, likewise, be enforced at the end of the related run.

Thanks Mac.  I took the shortcut with my wording because of laziness.  Appreciate the clarification.
