Football Officiating > National Football League
TUSH PUSH

oldtimerref:
So much had been discussed about this play and even several former NFL officials feel it is not . football play. Wing officials say it is hard to officiate because they cannot see false starts. Although this is hard to imagine if NFL would go back to using an UMPIRE, he would be in a good position to see movement from interior linemen. Why would NFL not use an umpire since the issue is certainly not money.
ilyazhito:
The NFL moved the umpire out of the middle because they were losing too many umpires to injury. Players would use the umpire as a screen, players would run into the umpire, and it would only take one person landing on the umpire wrong for him to have to go the hospital. The NFL decided to limit the damage to its officials and have the umpire in the offensive backfiled unless the offense was attempting a scoring kick or in the last two minutes of each half, when the ball needs to be spotted quickly.

I knew the reasoning but maybe move the CENTER JUDGE to umpire position on Tush Push play situations. False starts are happening far to often on these plays and creating a big advantage for the offense.
