Video of recent game
« on: December 13, 2019, 08:59:01 AM »
There is a video making the rounds of a play in one of the last couple of weeks playoff games.  The point of the communication is that there should be a defensive chop block called.   In my opinion it is not a chop block, it is a flagrant personal foul with disqualification.   I tried to cut it down to post it but I have been unsuccessful.   If anyone can post the clip, I would be grateful.

I have the video that I can email if that would help.   I think it was Falls City vs Bremond.

Why would it be flagrant? If this was the offense fouling it would be a basic chop.

1) The defender was moving away from the direction of the runner.
2)  The defender dove at the offensive tackle's knee going full speed.
3) In my judgement,  it was an attempt to injure the opponent.

It is a Zip mp4 file.
It appears this type of file is not supported to attach.

...but it worked on my computer.  :)

Oof.  That's tough to watch.  It's #75, the right tackle.   Knees aren't supposed to bend that way.

If I saw that, I would have that as a flagrant as well, his sole intention was to engage the lower half of the tackle, he was never even looking at the QB, the ball, or the play going on around him.

My sentence is incomplete.  If you have WinZip, you can open it, but the actual file will not upload to this forum as mp4 file types are not supported for upload to this site.

Nasty play, but I would want to know more.  Hard to call this a chop block because it requires a "block" or intentional effort to obstruct an opponent.  This was not an attempt to block.  Different if this was during a return of some kind. Here, it look like the stand up outside LB was trying to deliver a "pay back" shot to the tackle for some earlier play.  So, I would want to know more about what had been happening in the game to guide whether this is a flag or a talking to.  Maybe you can make this a personal foul for a hit against a player no longer in the play.  But very close to the POA, so hard to make that stick.  Not really sure it meets the criteria for any specific foul -- but I do think it is flagrant under 2-10-1 if you can otherwise find something illegal.  So, if you throw a foul here, you need to have an ejection. IMO.

Could we go with IBW on defense since this block isn’t at 10&2? Looks like it’s not directed towards the front.

The H or L might get it  since it appears to open up to them or possibly the R in an 8-man crew.  If this is processed and called real-time then that official needs a big pat on the back.  I figure that I've officiated over 50,000 snaps so far in my career and I hope that's the only time I see this but it does remind me that a CHB can occur anywhere on the field by either team.  Good play.

Everyone has an opinion on this very rare and interesting play. For what it's worth, here's the comment from an evaluator I sent the play to and believe it's a good breakdown/commentary of the play: "The incoming cornerback is anticipating contact from 7 who dodges him and goes out on a route. Since the corner lunged in anticipation of contact, he loses his balance and contacts OT 75 low while the tackle is engaged high with another defender. While the contact from the corner is unintentional, this is a CHB foul on the defense."

After watching it for about the 50th time and slowing it down to 1/2 speed, I can see what he means.  However, he is 4 yards up-field  from his original position.   I concede that a chop block call might be appropriate but I still like the flagrant PF. tiphat:
