S/B Quiz 12

Some pretty good ones.

1. 3/5 @ A-40. QB A12 hands the ball to A44 who heads toward the line, but then turns and flips the ball back to A12. Under a heavy rush, A12 carries the ball outside the tackle box and as he is about to be tackled at the A-35, A12 throws a forward pass that crosses the neutral zone and lands out of bounds with no Team A player in the area.
RULING: A, 4/10, A-35, snap (25).
Grounding is legal only by the player that first controls the snap and before the ball is in possession of another player. This is ING by A12, since it is thrown into an area where there is no eligible A player. LOD at the spot of the pass.

2. 3/10 @ B-40. Team A has 5 players in the backfield at the snap. QB A12 rolls to the right, throws a pass downfield, and the ball is intercepted by B44 at the B-10. During B44’s return, B21 attacks A88 from the blind side with force at the B-16. B44 is tackled at the B-45.
RULING: B, 1/10, B-8, snap (25).
There are live-ball fouls by both teams during the down. Team B may invoke the “clean hands” exception by declining the penalty for Team A’s illegal formation, and then Team A will accept the penalty for Team B’s illegal BSB, which, per 3&1, will be penalized from the spot of the foul (B-16), ½ the distance, to the B-8.

3. 1/10 @ A-25. A12’s pass downfield is batted by A88 while airborne and inbounds at the A-45 where he propels it toward eligible receiver A80. A80 catches the pass at the A-46 and is tackled at the B-40.
RULING: A, 1/10, B-40, ready (40 and running).
All action is legal. A forward pass may be batted in any direction by any player eligible to touch the ball. We can only assume A88 was eligible by position at the snap, and was not OB voluntarily prior to his touching of the ball, but, on those assumptions, his batting of the ball forward to a teammate is legal, and A80’as advance is legal, for a new series at the B-40. Note that A88, while airborne, could have actually grasped the ball and propelled it forward, and that would still be considered 'batting.'

4. 3/10 @ A-40. A12’s pass is intended for A88 at the B-25, and the catchable pass falls incomplete at that point. A88 and B21 are both playing the ball and running closely together while the ball is in flight, and A88 falls at the B-25 when his feet become entangled with B21’s feet.
RULING: A, 4/10, A-40, snap (40 and running).
If, in the judgment of the covering official, both players are legitimately attempting to touch, bat, or catch the ball, then neither are obviously attempting to impede the other; therefore, all action is legal, and the pass is simply incomplete.

5. 4/5 @ B-35. A44 takes the handoff and is hit at the B-29 where he fumbles. The ball is recovered by A88 at the B-27 where he is down.
RULING: A, 1/10, B-29, ready (40 and running).
On fourth down, when a Team A fumble is caught/recovered by a Team A player other than the fumbler, the ball is dead at that moment, and, if the spot of the catch/recovery is BEYOND the spot of the fumble, the ball is returned to the spot of the fumble (B-29). In this case, that spot is beyond the line-to-gain, so Team A is awarded a new series at that spot.  The game clock stops only for the award of a new series to A, and the play clock is set to 40 and should started when the ball became dead upon A88’s recovery.

6. 4/5 @ B-35. A44 takes the handoff and is hit at the B-29 where he fumbles. The ball is recovered by A88 at the B-31 where he is down.
RULING: B, 1/10, B-31, snap (25).
On fourth down, when a Team A fumble is caught/recovered by a Team A player other than the fumbler, the ball is dead at that moment, and, if the spot of the catch/recovery is NOT beyond the spot of the fumble, the spot of the recovery is the dead-ball spot. In this case, Team A failed to advance to/beyond their LTG after 4th down, so Team B is awarded a series at the dead-ball spot (B-31).

7. 3/Goal @ B-6. Ball carrier A22 dives for the goal line at the B-1. The ball in his possession goes over the top of the pylon and A22 then first contacts the ground out of bounds three yards beyond the goal line.
RULING: A, try, B-3, no clock (40 and running).
When a BC is airborne and he first returns to the ground OB, progress is given to the spot where the ball crossed the sideline. In this case, the ball crossed the sideline at the pylon, which is to be ruled a touchdown.

8. Try @ B-3. B21 intercepts Team A’s legal forward pass at the B-1 and is running at midfield when he is tackled by A19, who grasps and pulls B21’s face mask.
RULING:  A, kickoff, A-35, free kick timing (25).
By rule, non-flagrant fouls that occur after a COP during a try are declined. The try down is over.
