Title: Pep band director kicked out
Post by: walkintall on January 30, 2015, 10:09:05 AM
After several calls that went against Delta State last night in the second half, our coach, Jim Boone, got a tech, undeserved at that moment in the game in my opinion, but I get it. I've thought he deserved them at plenty of other times and didn't get them. I get it.

During the next time out, our pep band played 3 blind mice. I've been hearing 3 blind mice for at least 20 years at delta state. After they played it, the lead official, John St. Clair, walked over to the scorers table, said a few words, and our band director was asked to leave the coliseum.

Ever seen that? Is playing 3 blind mice "extreme" or "excessive" conduct as stated in 10.8?

I'm sure there's more to the story than just playing 3 blind mice one time, and will also bet this isn't the first time a game manager anywhere was asked to remove a band director from an arena.

I thought the same, and I hope you're right. If there is more, I don't know it. I can only relate what I saw.

During the timeout, the officials were in their normal spots. One out of bounds at the inbound spot and one under each goal. The band played 3 blind mice. St. Clair, who was on the opposite end of the court from the band, then walked over to the scorers table and spoke. After about 20 seconds, our student section started cheering and our band director was exiting the coliseum. The only thing I can figure is maybe they said something inappropriate to the official unfortunate enough to be standing in front of them. I hope it wasn't something he did, but was being held responsible for the conduct of a band member.

It's probably not the first time. I was just wondering if anyone had ever seen it. Coach Boone says in 30 years he has not. That's a lot of games. I'd never seen it until last night.

Years ago, the original San Diego Chicken appeared at that same venue for a women's game and we knew the routine ahead of time. He brought out the eye chart for me during a time out.

Me: "Am I supposed to go along with this?"
Chicken: "You will if you know what's good for you."

To this day, the picture of us standing under the basket that appeared in the next morning's Cleveland paper is one of my most prized possessions.

Awesome. I was there, but just a kid.

The word I am hearing from "someone in the know" is that there isn't more to the story. Tomorrow, I'll speak with "someone else in the know" and see what he says.
