6.2.2. Here again the rule book allows that "R may catch or recover a scrimmage kick in K's end zone". This seems so much more plausible to me than R catching or recovering a 'free-kick' in K's end zone and acknowledges that unlike R's endzone, K's endzone is still in the field of play and balls that cross it do not cause the play to be dead.
Be careful in stating your interpretation. Agree that a Kick in K's endzone is still a live ball, however by rule/definition it is not in the "field of play."
2-10-1 . . . The field is the area within the boundary lines and the endlines.
2-10-2 . . . The field of play is the area within the boundary lines and the goal Iines.2-10-3 . . . The side zones are the areas bounded by the sidelines, the hash
marks and the goal lines.
2-10-4 . . . The end zones are 10 yards in depth and are located at each end of
the field between the goal line and the end line. The goal line is in the end zone and
a team's end zone is the one it is defending.
