Title: NFHS- Injury at the end of 3rd quarter.
Post by: UmpireFromFlorida on September 01, 2013, 05:48:50 AM
Player B is on ground due to an injury at the end of  third quarter  play.  Coach/trainer comes to assist.  Simple question?  Does B have to come out for one play?  My favorite R1 says no.  The no because we did not stop play or kill the clock to attend the injured player.  Please respond.

The intent supposedly is to allow trainers and such to determine the extent of the injury.  Why would you even think about taking that thought process out simply because you did not stop the clock?  We are given a rule boom to know the rules, but common sence.doesn't get checked when you open it.

ART. 10 . . . An official’s time-out (which is not charged to either team) occurs, and the player shall be replaced for at least one down, unless halftime or an overtime intermission occurs when:

a. An apparently injured player is discovered by a game official while the ball is dead and the clock is stopped and for whom the ready-for-play signal is delayed, or for whom the clock is stopped. The player shall be replaced for at least one down, unless the halftime or an overtime intermission occurs. This time-out, if not charged, is an official's time-out.

Is the third quarter RFP delayed?

If a player, "is on ground due to an injury at the end of  third quarter  play.  Coach/trainer comes to assist", I would hope someone on the crew "discovers" what was going on and calls an "Officials TO".   Parsing words to interpret avoiding the necessity to keep that player out for one play, could prove very financially and legally troubling.

Cowman-having common "sense" not your spelling is knowing the rules.  When you don't go by them, one opens a door for trouble.  You didn't even answer the question.

Alupstate- You didn't answer either, I don't appreciate your comments about what is legally troubling.  WE did see the injury and time was called. Jeez.

HLinNC- Your reply was interesting however I know the rule so thanks for the review.  Are you saying he does not because it did not delay the RFP?  Ok, what if this was the middle of the second quarter?  No delay of RFP, would the player get to stay in?

Are you being intentionally obtuse?  HLinNC gave you the rule quote, which answers your question.

If an official's TO is taken for an injured player, OR the next RFP is delayed, that player must come out for one play.

If you know the rule then why are you posing the question?

I note this was your 6th post.  My mistake in assuming you are/were a newer official.  Some of us feel that by posting the rule cite, it helps lead an official to determining the proper answer rather than just telling you flat out our interpretation of it.

You will note I "bolded" the word AND which was intended to draw your attention to it for a reason.

I'll trouble you no more.

But he probably DID delay the RFP. At the end of a quarter, the next RFP comes about 60 seconds later. If it took longer than that to address the injured player, then the RFP was delayed.

I do believe I know the rule.  However, I stated that my R who I respect was the one who said the player did not have to sit out.  I found no casebook play.  I also disagreed with my R.  But, I wanted to see what thoughts were out there. I have noticed the rules knowledge on this site is very, very good.  Thanks for those who replied.

Florida, you might want to take a deep breath.  You neglected to mention, you did see the injury or that you called a TO.  That in and of itself should have avoided your need to ask your question.

It was difficult to tell whether your question, as worded, was serious, or you were trying to show how smart you are with a "gotcha" question based on your knowledge of semantics.  Sometimes we all can get wrapped up so tightly in the language of the rules, we forget our primary job is to remain impartial and above all protect the children (even though they can be pretty big) we're helping to manage while they're playing a game under our supervision.

We're not supposed to be influenced by the emotions that, at times, can affect the judgment of those who have a vested interest in one team.  We all need to be reminded of that responsibility, from time to time.

Al- why would i put a gotcha question?  I'm not trying to be the smartest guy here.  That job would appear to be already taken.  I just care about being the best I can when you step on the field.  It is mind blowing to me, that i just asked a simple question and got all of these " great comments " and folks could just not simply answer the question on their rules knowledge.  I will take a deep breath at this point.  Thanks so much.

Play nice, gentlemen!

Umpire, you are new to this board. You can learn a lot here by leaving the attitude somewhere else.
