We had our second meeting tonight and one of our veteran officials ( who ought to retire but that's another discussion) brought up that in a spring game that he worked earlier this spring that the center would come to the line and bark the signals. He and another official insisted this was illegal I argued there us no rule that says the center can't call the signals. They insisted that it was making a travesty of the game I said how?
Does anyone know of a rule that says the center can not call the signals?

In NCAA there is no such rule. As long as he has his mouthpiece on, any player can call signals all day long (OK, defense cannot call signals that are meant to disconcert offensive signals).

Have seen (heard) it several times.

No problem in NFHS.

That was my argument with it. I ask the officials to show me in the rule book where the center cannot call the signals. They kept saying that it falls under rule 9.5.2 I believe that is the rule. They are making a travesty of the game. I said that when they started using the shotgun back in the 70's were they making a travesty of the game or when the wildcat became popular was that making a travesty. Most of the officials agreed with me. But the 2 that we're arguing with me (who by the way are both board members and White Hats) would not listen.

You should ask them if they think this new fangled "forward pass" rule is gonna catch on or if they think it's gimmicky and a travesty.

Maybe you need to go over their head and get an interp from the district or state interpreter to shut them up.

Just be glad your area teams never ran the A-11 offense. Their heads would have exploded.
Cue Coach Bryan in 3-2-1.....
