Going through my bag, it seems that my old watch has disappeared.
It didn't have a whole lot going for it, so I'm hoping to get some suggestions. I'm willing to pay more for things like GPS or heart rate monitoring if the quality is good.
What do you use?

All you need is a watch to be able to keep the game clock on, or the 25/40 on -- so you need a timer. That Timex $25 watch.
I have used a GPS watch with an HR Monitor just for fun -- see how many miles I cover during a game, how my HR is in the 4th Qtr - close game -- am I staying calm. But I already have the GPS/HR watch for my running / triathalon events. You do not need it for officiating that is for sure, so I would not spend money just to do that.

I agree with Dallas. A $25 is all you need. Anything with a count down time. If you can get one with a vibrating alert instead of the beep so no one else knows when timer goes off. Here is a Casio model (http://www.amazon.com/Casio-W735H-1AVCF-Super-Illuminator-Black/dp/B00BS8U88W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407536134&sr=8-1&keywords=casio+w735h).

For cheap watches, I'd like to recommend the Geonaute 200, which appears to be surprisingly hard to find in the USA. Over here it costs about $20 and has the critical feature of a countdown timer that can be reset to any value (which I've never seen on anything else that retails for under three figures), for when you balls it up and don't stop the watch on that penalty enforcement that takes about 90 seconds to sort out, or when you're working another position and the timekeeper's watch runs out of battery midway through Q2. It also has a wonderful idiot-proof reset button that has to be held down for about five seconds before it resets the timer.

I know I don't need anything fancy, but I am running more and also want to do some more soccer if my schedule allows it, so I'm open to watches that do a bit more if they come well recommended.

I Googled the user's manual and didn't see that function listed... can you post a picture of the watch? Maybe I looked at the wrong one.

I'm leery of any product where I search for a website under the company/brand name and nothing shows or the wrong product (a camera only, in this case) shows up.
It looks like their products are sold at various outlets though.

I use a Casio G Shock. Do not know the model number. Pretty simple, use the countdown timer for the 25 second and switch to the stopwatch for timeouts.

Okie
Watches for Football and running really serve two different purposes. A good GPS / running watch - Garmin 210 -- for example does not have a countdown timer. When I wanted that data - I just wore two watches. My $25 Timex for football and my Garmin 210 for my personal HR / GPS - mileage data.

Some of the soccer people use theirs for game time, but now that I think harder, they're probably just using it in count-up mode.

I use the Reebok Officiating watch.

This is just a link I found on the internet - I haven't used this company.
It's really a nice watch - pain to change the battery, but it works well for officiating football. If you stop the clock at like 1:31, you can easily up the time to 1:33 if need be. I've never seen another watch be able to do this. Unfortunately, no :25 clock.
I'd imagine in the next few years, with the coming of the smart watches, they'll be an app on one of them which lets us do all the timing easily.

The web link says that it is no longer available.

"It also has a wonderful idiot-proof reset button that has to be held down for about five seconds before it resets the timer."
Do you know of any watch that would have this feature for a timer? I need something that is "idiot proof" when it comes to resetting timer

I have been searching for this same unicorn. Please someone say they found it!

If enough of y'all wanted a Geonaute, then I wouldn't mind buying a few up and sending them over. $15 plus whatever shipping ends up as.
-
I'm interested in several. Let me know what shipping would cost.
-
I would be interested as well.
If you are shipping to Scott in any sort of near timeframe, I will be up from South Texas to the Hot Springs area around the end of August.
Scott,
I wish Id have gotten into officiating when I lived in the 501. <sigh>
