After 8 years on the wings, I will be the R for three games this season. I am not worring about the 95% of it. I am worried about the unusual play or something that happens once in a career. Any advice from the R veterans out there?

Trust your instincts and trust your crew. You are either right as a crew or wrong as a crew.

1. Trust your crew to do their jobs. You concentrate on doing yours.
2. Protect the QB. On a sweep where you're following the play, remind the off wing official to watch the QB.
3. Slow down on everything. Including your signals. However slow you think you're going with your signals, slow it down a bit more.
4. Lean on your U. A good U will take care of you. And if you can get your LJ to stay on you about starting the clock on the ready or the snap, that's a great thing.
5. Tell you crew that if they don't know the signal or enforcement, they better not throw the flag. :)
6. See the ball in the possession of the runner on the ground before blowing the whistle.
7. Have fun!

Looks like I get to have the fun tomorrow night. Just received a call from my ref, he is going out of town for a business meeting and can't make the game. Looks like I get to wear the white hat for the first time. Too bad, I don't have one. I am going to have to borrow one. And of course I don't have a shirt with an R on the back, going to have to borrow that also.
Should be a fun evening, hopefully, I won't forget my signals.

With a good crew, being the R is like steeling.
