Title: Arbiter Alternatives
Post by: cougar729 on September 26, 2014, 12:16:35 PM
Anyone use assigning systems other than the Arbiter?  Looking to gather information on possible alternatives for our local group.

I've used Ref Town in basketball. I liked it quite a bit.

Zebraware is massively inferior to arbiter, but it may cost less which might be intriguing for smaller chapters

That's being charitable.

How much does arbiter charge, anyway?

At one time it was $5 per official. But that was about 4 years ago.

Thanks.  At what point to they take your roster count?  Associations have guys coming in and going out all the time.

You license by the year, so you determine how many spots you need and roll with that.  Then if you need to bump that up you can, but you can't go down until the next billing cycle.

When you get to your max, you are done adding officials until you remove someone from your roster unless you want to pay to open up additional roster slots.

I've found recently it's slow and unresponsive.  Thanks for the info

We use arbiter but we negotiated a much lower rate per official and got several of the add ons at no charge.  Did a two year agreement with them.

What kind of add ons do they have?

We use Fairpoint Communications. It rings...I answer:

Al, the assigner : "Yo, Ralph, 'tis Al."

   Me : "Ayuh."

Al : "Got a ball game for ya' down on the Coast"

   Me : "Ayuh."

Al : " Sendin' One-eyed Smitty and Peg-leg Jones down with you. "

Me : "Ayuh, need to pack a picnic lunch."

Al : "School couldn't afford to pay for no more, but 'spect their gym teacher will do the lines."

Me : " 'Spect he'll be fair to middling."

Al : " Otta' start by 5:00 as one of their poles fell over, stop when sun's down."

   Me : "Ayuh."

Editor's note :  The closing "ayuh" indicates game acceptance.
Most have push-button dial- lot better than the rotary ones.
Many schools pay you on the spot -Canadian Loonies accepted at par.

At least you've upgraded from carrier pigeons, town crier, and smoke signals.
