Other than the mask or opening on the helmet, grab what you can when you can.

You don't want to get tackled by the hair?  Get a haircut.

I think they went though this in the NFL too. If I recall that was the same consensus by the announcers.

Surprised no one mentioned Ricky Williams for whom the rule was named after.

Several years ago a team arrived that had a tall, lanky wideout with a ponytail that reached the top of his numbers. In pregame, I asked his coach if he considered tucking his ponytail inside his helmet for safety purposes. Coach responded : " 'Spect not, his signature is his ponytail waving at the defender he's leaving in the dust as he runs for another TD. ;)".  Midway in the 1st period "Ponytail" caught a pass near the sidelines. Ponytail was quickly tackled there by his...ponytail :o. I'm sure it hurt....as Ponytail cried...Ponytail didn't see any further action until the 2nd half.....we were not able to see Ponytail's ponytail anymore (it was tucked inside his helmet).....Ponytail didn't score any TDs in the 2nd half, so he didn't need his "signature" :)

....and the band played on nAnA

In 1972 I chased a receiver down and had one option to get him. Pony tail bouncing around about two feet off his back. He went down, I got punched, he got thrown out. Three weeks later ... No pony tail.
