K attempts an onside kick,
K3 kick a little pop up kick over the head of the front Receivers on Rs free kick line. K20 is a speedster and is able to run down catch the ball in flight with NO R PLAYERS AROUND TO CATCH IT.
Is this a legal recovery by K and their ball. OR since it was caught in flight is it always KCI??

It is still a Free Kick that can be recovered by Kicking Team after going 10 yards. So, if there is no Receiver to Interfere with, then yes, the Kicking Team can pluck it out of the air and Kicking Team ball at spot of Catch / Possession. One of those plays that "you have to see" to make sure there is not KCI -- but it can be legally done.

I thought that was correct, Some of the high school crew I work with does college as well and this discussion came up. I stood firm it was legal (highly unlikely it could happen). I need to take some time today and search the rule book and readings to find the supporting rule now. Thanks

It is NOT legal in NFHS, which is where the confusion may have come from.

I had one in a recent U19 game, however looking at the precise wording it says "A Team A player beyond the neutral zone first touches or catches a scrimmage kick that no receiver could have caught while it was in flight".
In my game team A made no attempt to catch or go near the spot however if they would have been more alert they certainly could of got to the spot where the ball came down.
So should I have flagged them because A COULD have got there and chose not to?

Isnt this an easy call?
In order to have KCI, you must have a receiver "in a position to receive a kick".
No receiver, no KCI.

Sorry just re-read what I put and it should have been "team B made no attempt to catch or go near the spot" and obviously "B COULD have..."
