It seems like I found a rule reference to this once, but can't recall and can't find it now: after a try and before a KO, is there an actual timeout by rule? Or do we just allow them the time?
-
Officials timeout.
-
Never mind I found it.
Its actually uver 3-3-7-h: The intermission after a safety, try or successful field goal shall be not more than one minute. It may be extended for radio or television.

And we're up to what now? 2 minutes? Two and a half in some cases?

*best place to shave time off of your game! Be efficient between try and KO!

That's hard to do with TV and the way the rules are currently written. And you know TV isn't going to change.

If you're at a Notre Dame game that's on NBC, I think it's 4 minutes before the kickoff and another 5 after it!
/kind of joking
//not that much though

On one of the late NFL games last Sunday there was a score followed by a try and TV-TO. Then we had the KO followed by another TV-TO. And we wonder why the games are so long?

Do you think the players & owners are going to vote for $$$ reductions so we can have fewer TV TOs?

Asked and answered about 4 posts up.

I was at the Baylor vs Texas Tech game Saturday. KO at 2:30; game ended at 6:20. Almost 4 hours!!! :!# These game times are getting ridiculous!! :o
-
College games are going long this year. They may revisit the timing rules.
-
Again... what rule changes would you do to make the game faster?
Without touching TV breaks and all
Timeouts on first downs? That would be the only one I'd change but don't know how much time would it save...
-
If it really is passing offenses that are causing all the problems, clock on the ready after an incomplete pass. (This of course assumes that the obvious is politically unthinkable.)
-
Why not just 'fess up and acknowledge the power that the sponsors wield and change the timing rules to 15 minute running time per quarter with TO's for commercials on every, 1st down, score, COP and period end if we really need to get the game time inside of 3 hours. Games without commercials (not televised) don't seem to have any "too long" issues even when there is lots of passing. It doesn't take a study to get to the root of the time "problem".

Nails it... Wind the clock after incomplete passes once the ball is spotted outside the last two min of each half.

Obviously TV would prohibit that, but for the 95% of all other football games in America that aren't televised, it's not hard to do.

Do you really think the rules committee will agree to play by one set of rules for TV and another set for non-televised games? Hey, I know of a bridge for sale. ;D
-
Wasn't the weight of opinion on this board once that the NCAA would never dream of adopting a rule that changed depending on what time was left on the clock? I seem to recall that being raised quite a few times when they first started twiddling around with the clock rules, far too long ago.

They already do if you consider TV timeouts.

I was tempted to respond with, "you're joking, right??" I guess for some the rules over the years have been so ingrained in them, they don't really think of alternatives. There are several, however:
-- stop the practice of stopping the clock on first downs, except in last 2 minutes, but add a 2 minute warning; enforce the ball spotted by 25 or the clock is stopped and reset to 25 rule on all first downs
-- wind the clock after incomplete passes except in the last 2 minutes
-- wind the clock to start possessions except in last 2 minutes
Basically, the only time the game clock wouldn't run after a RFP is coming out of a time out. We end up giving teams WAYYYYY too many timeouts due to circumstances.
-
Screw all that complicated timing crap.
Just go to 30 minute running quarters.
