Title: Low turnout at the Bahamas Bowl
Post by: Official_21 on December 24, 2015, 05:11:14 PM
Wow...the Bahamas Bowl didn't excatly have a good turn out, with the exception of the two teams and their staff.

http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/sec-football/photos-bahamas-bowl-crowd-2015/

Wonder if both schools are going to make a loss, since it's not exactly cheap to travel and stay down there in the Bahamas.

Have to admit, the weather looked good, although a bit warm  ;D

Think the PR/Marketing people need to think things out  yEs:

When Northern Illinois went to the Orange Bowl a few years ago, a bunch of schools in the MAC went and chipped in to offset the huge financial burden they were going to take on by attending. As for me, I'll be in attendance at the Foster Farms Bowl in Santa Clara, CA.  ;D

"Made-for-TV" bowl.  Eyes on the screen > butts in the seats.

If I'm not mistaken the "St. Petersburg bowl" last week had like 12k? - maybe 14k...

Too many bowls. Period.

5-7 and 6-6 teams have no business playing in a bowl. IMO, even 7-5 is questionable.

As long as there are companies willing to pay for commercial time on television, there will be television companies willing to pay for the games to be played, and the games will be played. They don't need to sell the stadium seats for the bowls to be financially successful.   In the football of the future, there may be very few people watching the games in person.   And there will be only one official on the field whose job it is to put the ball in the correct spot.  All the other officials will be in a box with a multitude of television monitors and other technical equipment at their disposal.  After each play they will tell the ball spotter where to put the ball and if there are are any announcements to be made they will make it from the booth.

Sadly, you could be right.

I tend to agree with you, but I also think the contractual issues are another part of it, and that's been going on for quite a long time. In 1984, BYU blew through a cupcake schedule and at #1 and 11-0 on the year, barely beat 6-5 Michigan in the Holiday Bowl. Would an unbeaten team play someone who barely made a bowl in today's day and age?

Not a very good analogy, Brendan. (1) There are more bowls now than ever before. And more are added virtually every year. (2) The way the bowls are structured today, an unbeaten team would not be paired with someone 6-5. (3) The #1 team in the nation wouldn't be playing in the Holiday Bowl.

I've heard that ESPN either owns outright, or finances, a good number of them to fill up programming time.

In a few cases that's all they're doing.

How about this: should I-AA games not count toward the six you need for a bowl game? Don't some of the mid-majors schedule Delaware State or Southeast Missouri State throughout their non-conference schedule just so that they only have to beat two teams in-conference (and it just so happens that the two worst teams in your conference are on your schedule) to get to 6-6 and therefore a bowl game.

I don't believe FCS games count. I recall that changed several years ago.

I don't believe FCS games count. I recall that changed several years ago.

"Exception – FCS Opponent
Each year, a FBS institution may count one victory against a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) opponent that has averaged 90 percent of the permissible maximum number of grants-in-aid per year in football during a rolling two-year period. However, The Football Issues Committee may approve a waiver of the 90 percent requirement to permit a FBS institution to count a victory against a FCS opponent toward meeting the definition of a "deserving team" if a unique or catastrophic situation affects the FCS institution’s ability to average 90 percent of the permissible maximum number of football grants-in-aid per year during a rolling two-year period."

Not sure how accurate that is, since it's not from an official NCAA site... http://www.collegefootballpoll.com/bowl_eligibility_2015.html

I think those uniforms are illegal.  They don't cover the knees, or rear, or much else.  But, no complaints! tiphat:

I used to think this as well.  Too many Bowl Games.  Too many teams with average records going to Bowl Games.  Then someone mentioned to me that if, as we tend to say, the game is for the kids, then why not give more college kids a chance to play in a "big" game.  The reality is that most college players will not go on to play professionally.  For Seniors on these average teams it is one more chance to play, possibly their first chance for an ESPN moment, and they get to take a nice trip somewhere in the process.  It is kind of a neat way to end your career.

So you're advocating the "trophy-for-everyone" approach?

Come on, it's not like they're declaring both teams co-national champions for having made it to the incredibly prestigious Bahamas Bowl.  Instead, the bowl committee is helping these young men complete the journey to adulthood by showing them what a junket is.

Not trophy for everyone.  Just one more game, one more chance to play.  And a little extra adventure attached to it.

This is the funniest thing I've read in weeks.

I am; but I'm also an Illini fan and we have plenty of room in our trophy case. A bowl trip occurring more than once every decade is not asking for too much  ;D. More games, please!!!!!!  :sTiR:

This. Give the seniors one last chance to play. Yeah want a trophy, you've got to win though.

Um. Excuse me. *Pushes up glasses* But uh, Zamboni, technically, makes an ice *resurfacer*, not an ice maker.

Also, just because I didn't think Miami University was THAT bad this year (and for some reason, they don't call themselves Miami of Ohio...), the only 0-12 matchup would actually be Kansas vs. Central Florida.

I'm sure they'd give the trophy to the losing team as well, correct? I mean, anybody can go 1-12, but it takes talent and guts to go 0-13.
