I remember seeing this posted a couple of years ago. But can't find it. What are states paying now days?
Utah is $57 for Varsity. $64 for Post season. $44 for Sub Varsity.
-
It's a formula based on ticket sales in Texas. Average is $100 based on my experience. Country games will generally be less and big In town games a bit more.

In north central Ohio your lower level games are around $45 and your varsity around $65.

Saw it posted on the MHSAA website. It has gone up to $100/game with playoffs and championships staying the same.
Middle School and JV went up a bit too if I'm not mistaken.

Texas may get more for varsity games, but it sure looks like all of the other states get more for sub varsity.

Volume of games more than makes up for that. When I worked in Michigan, a 9th/JV doubleheader was a relatively rare occurrence. I even remember specific occasions where the association would have two different crews at the same site for back to back JV/frosh games.
I dont think I worked any JV sites in Texas last year that I had fewer than 2 games...and most of the time it was 3-4. With the changes to 1204 this year, TX will be above average on JV based on the requirements to work all games at a site in a given day provides the opportunity to pull over 150 for a triple/quad JV set.

I don't know what the rest of Virginia is paying, but for our association, we bill the schools:
JV - divisions 1 through 4 $350 (split among 5 officials, $70 each); divisions 5 and 6 $420 (divided among 7 officials, $60 each)
Varsity - divisions 1 through 4 $450 (divided among 5 officials $90 each); divisions 5 and 6 $630 (divided among 7 officials, $90 each)
If we provide a clock operator, that adds an additional $70.
Divisions 1 through 4 also are billed a travel fee of $65 to $80 per game divided among crew members as well.
We also have enough officials that we can cover just about every division 5 and 6 game (the larger schools) with 7 officials. If for some reason we can only cover with 5, those officials split the fee 5 ways instead of 7.

Hey Hef,
What part of MI where you in? I'm in Oakland County and the leagues I have worked we've always have done F/JV doubleheaders.
-
Something else to consider outside Texas - how is subvasity defined? In Texas, we not only have Frosh / JV -- we also have 7th and 8th grade, and the random Soph games. So, we have SV M, T, W and Th (and as noted earlier they are often 2x, 3x or 4x games).
I have a sense that most other states do not have 7th / 8th grade ball in school.
-
DallasLJ, I don't know about up there, but I suspect it is the same as we have in central Texas, we have to combine games at one site or they will not get covered.
Hef, about 10 years ago the UIL changed the pay rate to make all games a flat $450, for all levels. The schools complained and they changed it so the pay is based on how many minutes are played per quarter. I liked the flat fee structure because it made it easy for the schools and officials to know how much they were to get paid, instead of having to guess how many minutes are played per quarter, and we didn't have as much trouble getting guys out to work games. Yes, pay does make a difference. When you are looking to work a double header with kickoff at 4:30 and the field is as hard as a rock, with no grass and mostly dirt and dust, and the temperature is 106 with an index of 115, yeah, most guys don't really want to be out there.

I worked out of Midland/Bay City/Saginaw area.

I'd like that $450 flat rate too Doc

I would imagine that would make getting any sort of meaningful increase in the future pretty difficult.
the dialogue for a $5-10 increase (per official) is easier to have than a $50-100 increase (per game).
-
You missed my sarcasm Hef. I'm sure Doc meant $45 not $450

Dallas, in our association, everything below varsity is sub-varsity. One of the counties we serve offers middle school ball, and some of the schools we serve had both a JV and a freshman team. (I'm not sure if they still have both Frosh and JV, after budget cuts a few years back.)
Middle school and Frosh games pay the same and regular JV.

Ohh...I thought he meant $450 as a flat fee for the whole game, split by however many officials worked.
-
South Dakota is $100 for all varsity. Regular season, playoffs, even the state final. $100 flat no matter which varsity game it is.
-
Tennessee is $100 per game in both the regular and postseason. ECO gets $70. Mileage is paid for playoff games.

Maybe an extra zero in there??!!
-
NJ is $85 for varsity regular season and playoffs (mostly 6 man) and $60 for frosh/JV.
-
I do like the idea of paying a flat rate for the crew and then they divide it among themselves. With our lack of qualified young officials I can see some of the bigger schools say, "Coby, since you are one of 4 all div 1 crews left in 2025 with any experience, I am going to give you $3000 for a 7 man crew, 2 clock operators, and 3 chain guys."
-
You might wanna rethink that after you check out the employment law issues that you are gonna have.

I might come back home for those rates.
Here in our association it is:
Varsity $76
JV $61
Frosh $60
The reason Frosh and JV are so close is we are paid extra to work a 5th quarter for Frosh games.

Good reason to not work 9th grade in Cali

It's not a big deal and unlike Houston, we work all levels of high school with at least four officials. I hated having only three on the field for subvarsity there. :)

MAINE : $71.50 varsity, 4-5 officials
$50.50 sub-varsity, 3 officials
Mileage : $ 0.45 per mile first 100 miles, $ 0.23 per mile thereafter

Post Season : varsity fee X 1.25 playoffs, 5 officials

In my experience around here, we subvarsity guys work twice as hard for the same amount of money. :P
Freshman/JV games are $45/game and varsity is $90. What hef described above as a rare occurance is actually what I've been doing every week for two going on three years. We get to the school, work the freshman game, and then usually have about 20-30 minutes for the two JV teams to warm up, then get on with the JV game.
That makes for some late nights sometimes. There was one non-conference freshman game I worked that was delayed an hour and 45 minutes because the visiting team's bus driver got lost and wound up calling the AD, who called the home school's AD to ask for directions. That's probably the one and only time I will ever see a pregame delay of game penalty.

I think you will find your experience is no different from the rest of ours. I have officiated JV games withi 3 man, I have worked many games 2 man, and even one 8th A and B game doubleheader by myself. Some of the districts in the Dallas area pay for 4 officials for 7th and 8th grade, while others pay only 3. Sometimes officials fail to show. Sometimes schools buses breakdown or get delayed. I have had many Subvarsity games delayed by an hour or more. But never, never, never, never, would I ever penalize a team for delay of game because they got to the game site late.
-
I can only speak for the St. Louis area of Missouri.. but our varsity fee (5 officials) was just raised to $93/official for certain athletic conferences. Subvarsity (JV/Frosh) is $55. Many schools are going to only a single sub-varsity team as they are having troubles finding players. Little league around this area consists of 4th grade through 8th grade and based on having issues finding officials to work those games several leagues are paying $55/official with 4th-6th grade using 3 officials and 7th and 8th using 4 officials per game.

It wasn't my decision and my opinion wasn't asked. I was so new at that time I didn't even know what to say about it. I'm still that way to a degree-off the field, much to the chagrin of some folks here, I can be loud-mouthed and opinionated, but on the field, my mouth is wired shut and I tend not to speak unless spoken to. Which is still ironic because that's one of the few times where my opinion actually matters.

Actually, IF a penalty was called , it would be a USC (8-1-g-2) against the HC...not the way to get a game off to a good start :(. The only exception might be IF the bus driver was also the head coach AND he decided to stop by the home of the prom queen's divorced mom/widowed grandmother for a >:D pre-game conference >:D on the way to the field. :)

NY varies by section of the state. For my area (Albany) for this year:
Varsity: R gets $93, four addition on-field officials get $89, clock gets $57
Subvarsity (HS): Four officials, $67.50
Middle school: Three officials, $60.50 (+$15 if they do a "fifth quarter", which is common)
Youth: Varies, but around $45, usually four officials
Sectional semifinals: varsity + $3
Sectional finals: varsity + $7
All officials receive $7 travel allowance over the above numbers. (This was changed from a calculation based on IRS mileage rate several years ago.)
Best guess at what state-level playoffs pay would be around $20 more, since we're not the highest-paid section in the state and I figure playoffs have to beat that.
