Title: Coin Toss
Post by: Storm13 on August 21, 2018, 02:57:34 PM
I wanted to see what you guys use for the coin toss in your games.  Guess this is a referee question but I was just wondering.

I hold either a 1 or a 2 behind my back and let the visiting team guess what it is while showing the home captain. If they guess correctly, they get the first option.

In a 7-on-7 tournament, I let the captains do rock, paper, scissors, best of 3.

Over the years, I have accumulated numerous non-currency flipping coins, but I still haven’t found one that is perfect, from the factory.  I use a coin that has a helmet on one side and a football on the other side, and fill in the helmet with red sharpie marker, and the football with black sharpie marker, to make it much easier to recognize which side is up when it is laying on the ground.

I would like to get a 1 3/4” bronze coin that has the word HEADS in fire engine red letters, with a helmet outline in the background, on one side, and the word TAILS in pure white letters, with a football outline in the background on the other side.

I find the color coding to be very helpful.

I use an Ike silver dollar. To relieve the captains' stress I'll often ask if they know who that is an engraving of. It is rare that they know. The best ;D was one response of : "Some ole' dude that once was once a bigshot." The other captain responded : "Looks sorta' like grandpa!"

I change depending on the game and my mood.  Usually a TASO chapter coin that I tell the captains has my picture on the back (a zebra's butt).  Then in no particular order; an over-sized TAPP's state championship coin, a silver dollar, a very cool retirement coin that was given out by a past crew member from his retirement from the Texas DPS with a gold star on the back and one I got last year at a Military Appreciation pre-game from one of the Generals at Ft. Hood.

I'm in the Kennedy Half Dollar camp.  It's cheaper to replace if lost than any special flipping coin.

I also have a quarter in my hat brim for emergencies.

I like your idea of a backup! Last year, while killing time during a thunderstorm, I flipped "Ole' Ike" into my zebra toolkit. As luck would have it, the game was going into overtime. Realizing that Ole' Ike was back in the official's room, I asked my crewmates if they had any change - they didn't :(. I then asked the home coach if he did as we prepared to head to midfield. His response :
"Ain't got no pockets in these here shorts, ref, but maybe Slim, the downs marker guy, does." :( :(
Slim had a quarter and said : "'Spect I'll git her back?"
I replied : "Ayuh, 'spect so..I'll send 'er back with coach.."

MORALE : DON'T FORGET ABOUT A POSSIBLE OT!!

....AND THE BAND PLAYED ON...

Our association has coins created for us that we use for every varsity game.  They're in our game kits when the kit is handed out.

What else is in the game kit they hand out?

As a closet numismatic aficionado, I take the coin toss VERY seriously.  ;)  I use a bicentennial Eisenhower dollar because a) it's hefty and it flips good, and b) it's cooler than a regular Eisenhower dollar.

I used to live in Australia so I use an Australian half dollar.  It's large and is octagonal so it looks a bit like pirate treasure or something.  The captains tend to find it interesting and its different having the Queen for heads and a kangaroo and emu for tails.

I use Ike as well.   I'm in KS so here's my spiel.

Fellas this is a an Eisenhower coin.  You know who Eisenhower was (most do)?  So once we get that right, I say, he's also the only President to do what you're doing tonight, play Kansas High School football.

I tend to get good feedback with it.

I, too (three?), use an Ike dollar for little kids games on occasion, not so much on Thursday/Friday as that's not my job those nights -- but I did save the day since it was in the bottom of my bag once. Both the white hat and umpires wives were "being helpful" and removed all that loose change from their bags during the off season, and then Week 1 comes around and.... oops.

Welcome to our forum, Colorado, I hope you'll find it both interesting and informative. By the way, what goes into a vegemite sandwich :) ?

Thanks Ralph and the answer to that is a horrible concoction not suitable for human consumption.

I'm a variety type of guy so I like to mix it up and keep it fresh from week to week.  Mostly I use those fifty cent piece sized souvenir coins that you can get when visiting places.
