Title: Illegal Kicking in the End Zone
Post by: NVFOA_Ump on July 20, 2019, 07:30:02 PM
Had this play in a men's league game today:

4th and 18 for Team A at their own 11 yard line.  Team A is in punt formation and the snap is a loose ball roller that the kicker kicks as it is rolling along the ground and the ball goes out of the back of the EZ.  What are the possible results of this play including any penalty enforcements in both NCAA and NFHS rules?

Was the ball in the end zone when it was illegally kicked?

Important information, yes.

If the kick happened in the end zone, no option, as the result of the play and the result of the penalty is the same - safety.

If the kick happened in the field of play, team B has the option of either taking the safety or taking the ball whereever the 10 yard penalty from the spot of the kick (half the distance, most likely) leaves the ball.

My bad, I know that the location of the ball is critical here and I did one of those assumes (not good to do  ;D).  It was in the EZ when kicked.

Safety if ball is in the end zone, however you slice it.

If the ball is say at the B4, then you can decline for a safety or take the ball half the distance with a loss of down, B 1/G @ B2.
