Title: Coastal Carolina - Liberty
Post by: BetweenTheLines on December 27, 2020, 04:22:33 PM
Are field goals in OT dead if they are blocked in NCAA play?

Don’t have a rulebook pulled up but my understanding is no. It’s is live, but in this case, since it was blocked and went beyond the LOS, it could only be advanced by B. Since B was already ahead, essentially the game is over.

Don’t know the specific rules for it offhand but that is my understanding.

On the replay the wing official was killing it as soon as the ball hit the ground. Players do bonehead things. I hate to think IW, but you have to allow for mistakes, he never did!

Where did the ball land after it was blocked?

1) Incorrect mechanic by LJ for sure.
2) Technically, it's an IW, as the signal kills the play.
3) This is one we can (and should) just "steamroll" over because the kick crossed the NZ, nobody is trying to advance it, and the team behind cannot do anything else with the ball with it beyond the NZ.  Replaying the down and literally following the rulebook would be the worst possible choice on how to handle this situation.

Now, if the ball was still behind the NZ, now we have a whole different can of worms on how to handle this!

Landed beyond LOS, bouncing around towards the sideline but never went OOB

Definitely this. Do not be the guy who knows the rules but does not know when to apply that knowledge.

"No player attempts to secure it"

Large leeway in interpreting that clause. I agree, don't be "That guy"
