Title: Ball placement by Umpire for snapper's preference...
Post by: ElvisLives on October 25, 2021, 08:05:14 AM
I only know NCAA rules, and the snapper is permitted to adjust the ball as he likes before the snap, as long as he doesn't lift the ball off the ground, make a movement that simulates the start of the snap, and the long axis of the ball is parallel to the sidelines when the snap begins. He may adjust the ball by rotating it around either of its axes, and elevate one end of the ball. What more adjustment is possible? None. So, why are we concerned with how we spot the ball? We aren't. We simply spot the ball, and let the snapper do his thing. Nobody complains or criticizes, and all is well.

Do other rule sets not allow the snapper to adjust the ball?

In NFHS, you can even lift the ball to adjust. 7-1-2 : "The snapper may lift the ball for L(banned word) rotation.....". I see no need to ask snapper.

What? No idea what that would be. Got any hints?

I'm not sure why that was in there.  The banned word was "lateral".  I removed that line in the banned words list so it should show up now.

Ah. That word. Since that word isn't in my vocabulary, I had difficulty imagining what word should go there. ;D

But, I don't know why they need to lift the ball for that. I was a deep snapper in HS, and, as (relatively) puny as I am, I had no problem grabbing the end of the ball and rotating it about its long axis. I never felt the need to rotate it about its short axis (normal to the ground), but I'm sure I could have made that happen without lifting the ball. But, if that is allowed in NFHS and it doesn't cause problems, then by all means...

I agree. Had a youth game this year where a backup center (way down on the depth chart) would come to the line, pick up the ball with both hands, and get it just right and snug in his (gloved) hand before putting it back on the ground to snap. We did a little preventive officiating to help him appreciate the fine art of being a center...

"Youth Football" is the PERFECT opportunity to change a really BAD habit. Hopefully a simple "You can NEVER/EVER do that" (constructive) warning will eliminate a lifetime of problems.  It might take a couple of warnings to imbed the lesson, but if all else fails a flag(s) for "illegal snap" might help.

"Where do you want the laces?" is good to ask in bad weather on a grass field.  If you plop it in the mud right where he holds it, it will be a problem.  Any other scenario, just spot it.

And during scrimmages!. Can’t tell you how many times I have had a snapper lift the ball first game of the year.
