Title: S-B Quiz Week 7
Post by: ElvisLives on October 14, 2022, 11:59:54 AM
1. 3/15 @ A-30. QB A12 drops back to pass and looks downfield to his primary receiver A88. As A88
breaks to the boundary he is held by B21 at the A-40. A12 scrambles and finally tucks the ball and runs
to the A-34.
RULING:
A, 1/10, A-44, ready (25).
B21’s holding foul is 3 and 1 enforcement with the end of A12’s run (A-34) as the Basic Spot. The 10-yard penalty from the Basic Spot takes the ball to the A-44, and the penalty carries an automatic first down.

2. Free Kick @ A-35. Team A tries a surprise onside kick and kicker A90 drives the ball directly into the
ground and the ball bounces high. A88 is running downfield to get to the kick and is able to gain
possession of the ball at the A-48 as the ball is on its downward flight from the initial bounce. B21 was
in position to possess the ball on its downward flight but A88 took the ball just before it got to B21.
After possessing the ball, A88 advanced two yards and fell to the ground.
RULING:
B, 1/10, A-33, snap (25).
What? We didn’t see this when it happened? Or in the weekly training video?  ;D
This is classic kick catch interference by A88. B’s ball, 15 yards from the spot of the foul, 1/10.

3. Free Kick @ A-35. While the kick is in the air, B21 gives a waving signal that does not meet all the
requirements of a valid fair catch signal. The ball is caught by B21 at the B-5 and the play is whistled
dead.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-25, snap (40 and running).
A catch of an untouched free kick by a B player that has given a valid OR invalid fair catch signal causes the ball to become dead, and, if behind the B-25, Team B is awarded the ball at the B-25, 1/10.

4. Free Kick @ A-35. While the kick is in the air, B21 gives a waving signal that does not meet all the
requirements of a valid fair catch signal. The ball is caught by B44 at the B-5 and the play is whistled
dead.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-5, snap (40 and running).
Following any kind of fair catch signal by any other B player, a catch of a free kick by a B player that has NOT given any kind of fair catch signal causes the ball to become dead at that spot, and Team B is awarded a scrimmage series at the spot of the catch.

5. 1/10 @ A-40. Team A is in a no-huddle offense and is moving to the line when the ball is made ready
for play. Although some players settle into their positions and stop, A21 goes in motion just before the
last player of Team A stops. A21 is still in motion when the ball is snapped, and back A44 gains five yards
on the play.
RULING:
A, 1/15, A-35, status quo (25? 40 and running?).
A21 commits a dead-ball foul for an illegal shift that converts to a false start. The five-yard penalty is enforced at the succeeding spot, and the down continues. Insufficient information to determine status of either clock.

6. 2/10 @ A-8. QB A12 comes down the line on an option play. From the A-6, A12 pitches the ball
backward towards back A21, but B55 bats the ball at the A-4, and the ball rolls through and out the back
of Team A’s end zone.
RULING:
A, free kick, A-20, free kick timing (25).
Batting of a pass (forward or backward) does not impart impetus on the ball, and the passing team remains responsible for the ball becoming dead behind a goal line. Since the goal line in this case is the passing team’s, the natural result of the down is a safety, 2-points for Team B, with a free by Team A from the A-20 to follow.

7. 4/10 @ B-45. A90’s punt is high and during the kick, B21 gives a valid fair catch signal while standing
at the B-10 and never touches the ball. The ball lands at the B-4 and bounces sideways in the field of
play. While the untouched ball is loose in the field of play, B21 blocks A80 who is at the B-5. The ball
comes to rest at the B-4.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-2 ½, snap (25). B, 1/10, B-2, snap (25).
A player that gives a FC signal and does not touch the ball may not block an opponent during the down. The 10-yard (half-distance) penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul. In this case, the penalty from the B-5 takes the ball to the B-2 ½, B’s ball, 1/10. On a scrimmage kick, this can be PSK enforcement, which it is, in this case. The 10-yard (half-distance) penalty is enforced per 3 & 1 from the PSK spot (B-4), taking the ball to the B-2, 1/10.

8. 4/10 @ B-45. A90’s punt is high and during the kick, B21 gives a valid fair catch signal while standing
at the B-10 and never touches the ball. The ball lands at the B-4 and bounces sideways in the field of
play. While the untouched ball is loose in the field of play, B21 blocks A80 who is 2 yards deep in the
end zone. The ball comes to rest at the B-4.
RULING:
B, free kick, B-20, free kick timing (25).
A player that gives a FC signal and does not touch the ball may not block an opponent during the down. The 10-yard (half-distance) penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul. On a scrimmage kick, this can be PSK enforcement, which it is, in this case. The end of the kick is the B-4, which is the PSK spot. Per 3 and 1, the penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul (in B’s end zone), which leaves the ball in B’s end zone; thus, the result of the penalty is a safety, 2 points for Team A, with a free kick by Team B from the B-20 to follow.

In 7 and 8, the penalty is governed by PSK enforcement.

Oh, yes, indeed. Only had it happen to me on a free kick, so I had that stuck in my mind. I will make the corrections!
Thank you.

In 6 we are to assume that the batted ball was airborne.  If the ball had hit the ground prior to the batting, then things would change significantly.

In 7 the PSK spot is the B-4 so B 1st and 10 at the B-2.

6: I don't like assuming, but that is a safe assumption for this question (I hope).

8: Corrected.

In 8, how are you getting the PSK spot at the 20?  The kick ended at the B-4.  I agree with the end result, but the PSK spot is the B-4.

I have never been diagnosed with dyslexia, but that's the only explanation I can offer. Gee whiz.
But, we get the same result, since the spot of the foul is in B's end zone. Still a safety.

I'll fix that, too.

On question #1 I think the basic spot is the previous spot because the foul is during a pass play...  2-30-1 &  10-2-d-3

Forward Pass Play (2-30-1)
ARTICLE 1. A legal forward pass play is the interval between the snap and
when a legal forward pass is complete, incomplete or intercepted.

Rostrum, there wasn’t a pass play during the down. There was a running play. The potential passer couldn’t find anybody open, so he took off and ran, and advanced across the NZ, and was eventually ‘downed’ at the A-34. So the Basic Spot is the end of his run (A-34). There was no pass thrown. You gotta have a legal forward pass thrown to have a pass play during a down.

If I apologized every time I was wrong about something, I would be apologizing.....well, a lot. That is the purpose and value of this discussion board. Keep 'em coming.
