Already into week 9. Let me know what I screwed up.
1. 4/10 @ A-45. Team A leads 31 – 28, with 0:07 left in the 4th quarter. QB A12 takes the snap, waits in the pocket to run time off the clock, rolls slightly right, and then throws a pass high and deep from the A-40 that lands out of bounds and is well beyond the boundary at the B-35. The game clock expired just before the ball hit the ground. A12 was not outside the tackle box when releasing the pass.
RULING:
Game over.
Actually, Insufficient information. But, on the presumption that A12 is not under pressure within the tackle box, his pass is ‘legal grounding,’ since he was not ‘under pressure’ (attempting to conserve yardage or time). Thus, this is just an incomplete forward pass, and time in the 4th period expired before the ball became dead.
On the other hand, if A12 was under pressure, he is obligated to attempt to throw the ball to area where there is an eligible A player. “Area” is not defined, but throwing the ball “…well beyond the boundary…” could be interpreted as being NOT in an area occupied by an eligible A player, and would, thus, be a foul for intentional grounding. If that is the intent, then the ruling would be:
B, 1/10, A-40, extend the period to play this down (25).
2. 1/10 @ A-45. Guard A66 is next to the snapper. Immediately after the snap, A66 blocks nose guard B55 at the A-46 and the block is below the waist at the side of the opponent. Runner A21 gains 8 yards on the play.
RULING:
A, 2/2, B-47, ready (40 and running).
A66 is a lineman within the tackle box, and is allowed to block below the waist from the front AND side in his initial charge, up to one yard beyond the neutral zone. All legal action, and play continues.
3. 1/10 @ A-45. Guard A66 is next to the snapper. Immediately after the snap, A66 blocks linebacker B33 at the A-48. The block against B33 is below the waist and directed from the front. Runner A21 gains 8 yards on the play.
RULING:
A, 1/22, A-33, ready (25).
Blocking below the waist more than one yard beyond the neutral zone by any A lineman is prohibited. Per 3 & 1 with the basic spot at the end of A21’s run (B-47), the 15-yard penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul (B-47), taking the ball to the A-33, where 1st down will be repeated.
4. 1/10 @ A-35. On a sweep play toward the sideline, linebacker B55 goes out of bounds to avoid a block. Guard A66 is leading the play, and just as he steps on the sideline with his front foot, he drives his shoulder in the waist at the front of B55 who is still out of bounds at the A-40. Runner A21 gains 12 yards on the play.
RULING:
A, 1/10, A-47, ready (40 and running).
A66 is not clearly out of bounds when he blocks B55; thus, his block is legal. Play continues.
5. 1/10 @ A-30. As ball carrier A20 races downfield near the sideline, defender B56 grabs him from behind by the back of the jersey at the collar at the B-40. B56 continues with this contact for several yards but A20 does not go to the ground until tackled by another defender at the B-35.
RULING:
A, 1/10, B-35, ready (40 and running).
All action legal. The grasp of A20’s jersey by B56 does not qualify as a horse-collar tackle, since A20 wasn’t pulled down/back ‘abruptly.’ Play comntinues.
6. 1/10 @ B-40. B44 intercepts the pass of A12 at the B-20 and turns back upfield on the return. During the return, B21 approaches A88 from the blind side and blocks A88 with extended hands at the B-30. B44 returns the ball to the B-45 where he is downed.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-45, snap (25).
All action is legal. The block by B21 on A88 does not qualify as a blind-side block, since it wasn’t forcible. Play continues.
7. 1/10 @ B-40. B44 intercepts the pass of A12 at the B-20 and turns back upfield on the return. During the return, B21 approaches A88 from the blind side and blocks A88 by attacking with forcible contact with the shoulder into the chest of A88 at the B-30. B44 returns the ball to the B-45 where he is downed.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-15, snap (25).
The block by B21 on A88 is an illegal blindside block, since it was forcible contact. Per 3 & 1 with the end of B44’s run as the basic spot, the 15 yard penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul (B-30), taking the ball to the B-15, 1/10 for Team B.
8. 1/10 @ B-40. B44 intercepts the pass of A12 at the B-20 and turns back upfield on the return. During the return, B21 approaches A88 from the blind side and blocks A88 by attacking with forcible contact with the shoulder into the head of A88 at the B-30. B44 returns the ball to the B-45 where he is downed.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-15, snap (25).
The block by B21 on A88 is an illegal blindside block WITH TARGETING, since it was forcible contact to the head-neck area of A88. Per 3 & 1 with the end of B44’s run as the basic spot, the 15 yard penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul (B-30), taking the ball to the B-15, 1/10 for Team B. B21 is disqualified.
