While watching the World Cup, like many of you, I had a strong sense of patriotism FlAg1. We've had many great memories over the years of Olympic victories. Here are my top three:
(1) 1980- Team USA - a bunch of young collegians, beat USSR - that were coming off a series of victories over the NHL Allstars - in ice hockey. FlAg1 FlAg1 FlAg1
(2) 1976 - The then Bruce Jenner won the decathlon - in 8 of the 10 events, Jenner performed at his personal best. FlAg1 FlAg1
(3) 1984 - The first woman's marithon was held . The winner was MAINE's Joan Benoit . FlAg1
While I don't expect you to agree with my #3....
WHAT'S YOURS ???

To me, the single most heroic moment in Olympic history is when, in 1996, Kerri Strug NAILED her final vault run on a foot with torn ligaments, securing the Gold Medal for the US, hopping on one foot as she turned the 4 directions acknowledging the crowd, and then being carried away from the floor area by coach Bela Karolyi. Now that was some serious courage.

Definitely the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary where Matti Nykänen won all three ski jumping gold medals AND the Finnish ice hockey team got its first-ever olympic or world cup medal (silver).
Did you know that Finland holds the record for the longest streak of consecutive gold medals (ie. at least one gold medal in each olympics) in the Summer Olympics? :)

1912-2000. Most countries got their streaks broken either in 1980 or in 1984, but Finland took part in both.

I recall the Russians went somewhere that President Carter didn't want them to andwithheld the US. Was there also a political hit in 1984 also ?

The US boycotted the 1980 Olympics in Moscow over the USSR invading Afghanistan. The USSR (and allies) then boycotted 1984 in Los Angeles as "retaliation".
