Title: Team A Penalty Beyond Line to Gain
Post by: Bulldog75 on September 15, 2024, 12:00:43 PM
This one seems pretty basic and I thought I knew the answer, but someone disagreed with me and I couldn’t find it in the rulebook.

1st and 10 at A-30.  Screen pass to A12 who is forced out of bounds at the A-45.  During the run A22 is called for block in the back at the A-44.  The penalty moves them back to the A-34, but is it 1st and 6 or 1st and 10?

1st and 6.  This is a live ball foul so mark off the penalty and then see where that leaves you in relation to the line to gain.  In this case, you are 6 yards short, so going to replay 1st down with 6 yards to go.  A new series is not being awarded here so it's not going to be 1st and 10.  See rule 5-2-2.

I agree this is correct, but I can certainly see why someone would argue against it. Assuming time was not a factor, there's not really a penalty for A for the foul (except giving up yardage that they didn't really earn fairly in the first place) and they get a shortened LTG on a new series.

It’s not a new series, it’s the same series. People just get confused on this because it happened on first down. Make it second and 10 with the same play and it’s abundantly clear that it should be second and 6.

you're correct, it's not a new series... but it's still a shorter LTG than when the down was started, Team A fouled, and they get to repeat the down... just saying that I can see how it could be confusing to some.
