Title: From the Coaches 2011!!!
Post by: younggun on September 09, 2011, 12:36:26 PM
I didn't see one, so I decided to start one. Here we go.

-Why are they kicking off from the 40? They moved it back to the 35! (NFHS)
-When the QB says 'set' all the players must be set from that point forward
-OPI is 15 yards or LOD.... NOT BOTH!
-Its not illegal Helmet contact unless it is helmet to helmet!

There are a few for this year... I am sure I will have more

"Wait, hold on ... we had an illegal number on the convert, right? So how come we get the five yards _and_ we lose the point? That hardly seems fair. There's two consequences. You sure that's right?"

"Coach.... just like if the other guys scored a touchdown but had a holding penalty: they lose the points, and go back ten...."

"ohhhhhhh."

Working White hat in the JV game tonight. A's QB tosses a backward pass to the halfback. Halfback rolls left and throws the ball for the end zone. B player drills the halfback after the ball was released so  ^flag I throw the flag for roughing.

B's coach is going ballistic on the sideline. He wants a conference. I go over to him and asks what the problem is. He says, "How can you call roughing the passer, the halfback threw the ball not the quarterback."

For a minute, I didn't know what to say. I just explained to the coach that it was anyone throwing a legal forward pass was the passer.

Comment from the sideline after a particularly dumb foul everyone in the stands saw...

"Aw, man, didn't you know he rode the short bus here tonight?"

I always enjoy the simple "roughing the passer, not roughing the quarterback coach."

Worked a great game last night, visitors scored a TD with :07 left for the win.

However early in the first quarter after telling the coaches to back out of the restricted area several times I tossed a flag for a sideline warning. We had been told these coaches will be creeping closer to the field. I wanted to not lose control of the sideline.

After I told the R what I had, I told the head coach who the 3 coaches were. One of the asst coaches told me "we can have 3 in the box". I said no, that changed 2 years ago. He said it once again and added that they had done it all year and no other official has said anything to them. He then said I had better check the other team as they were on the field. The head coach must have told them to back up as I had no problems the rest of the night.

Here's my peewee coach quote of the week:

Late third quarter of a 0-0 ball game, the visiting team has already had one touchdown called back for a block in the back by number 34. Sure enough on their next possession, they drive and break on a run that is sprung by a block in the back by 34 at the point of attack. I flag that one. The runner scores and I hit my whistle to call it back. I signal and enforce the penalty and the coach is going bananas.

"That's two you've called! Who's it on?! 34?!!?? [Thirty four's name], QUIT DOING THAT!"

Then he turns back to me: "That's not right! He knows better than that, we taught him better, he wouldn't do that TWICE!"

Then 34 tells his coach "Coach I tripped!"

Coach: "Yeah...yeah he tripped!"

Me with a smirk: "Nice try coach. Third down!" as I blow in the ready.

Coach - "How can that be intentional grounding. He was outside the tackles?"
R - "Coach, that's NCAA rules, not high school."
Coach - "That's why I hate you guys so much.  You know too many rules."

Particularly soggy game today ... kid on the visiting team at the second-half choices ... "Hey, ref. Can we hurry this up? I'm getting trenchfoot over here."

I know I shouldn't have but...

I was working the chains and having alot of trouble keeping the coaching staff and players out of the field and my path to follow plays.  I had flagged them for the sideline warning and was not wanting to get into the game with a sideline call for a very close game.  The coach was not paying attention to me following a run dow our sideline and he got in the way.  Running full speed, 260lb, forearm shiver to the rib area of the coach in the way, and I did not have any more problem out of the coaching staff or their players the rest of the night.  He apologized for getting in the way after the play was over and he got back to his feet.  I said coach no problem you do know that I am supposed to throw a flag and it is an automatic 15 for us touching right?

To LostHog ....
I've done that on my very first game.
All ended up in a good laugh with the coach and I heard very little complain after that from that bench.
But at that time I was unaware of the concept of sideline interference!

Referee:  Heads white ins teh toss
White Coach:  We'll defer
Referee:  Looking at Blue coach:  You want the ball right coach?
Blue Coach:  I want the wind in the 4th quarter.
Referee:  We'll decide that in due time coach, right now you want the ball?  Say Yes!

Now that's super efficient.  Nothing like getting his second half choice out of the way at the coin toss.

I think the choice is made redundant by the other guy saying defer...

Assistant coach (from the US) for one of the first division teams in Norway went in during a time out, approx. 18 yards.
Me(Norwegian FJ): Coach, you need to get back to at least the numbers.
AC: (Stepping back to about 14 yds) Like now?
Me: A bit more, coach! You can't be coaching on the field
AC: (Stepping back to about 10, obviously trying to HACK me off) How about now?
Me: Still not there, coach... Keep going
AC: (Finally stepping outside the numbers) This is ridiculous, ref. Y'all need to stop having different rules. They let me do that all the time in the States.
Me: Maybe so, but this ain't Pee Wee, coach.
(Laughter from his HC and the sideline)

The top of the numbers are 9 yds in, "substitution lines". Once you go inside these you're a player, not a substitute

Had a coach last night who is known to complain on, literally, EVERY play for something. Guess I was the lucky one to have him on my sideline. Anyway, at some point in the 2nd quarter after he'd told me about 7 or 8 times he'd seen DPI or Def Holding on every pass play, we had another pass on the sideline opposite me. This time, there WAS decent contact that probably could have warranted DPI. However, the player caught the ball for a first down. Well of course, my coach erupts again, "THATS DPI! HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THAT WHY WONT YOU THROW A FLAG..." I said, "Coach, he caught the ball, it wouldn't really do much to throw a flag on that." "That doesn't matter, it was still DPI..etc etc."

Now, I WISH I had thought of this at the time to just drop a flag, go over to my R and say, "The foul was completely on the other side of the field, I wasn't watching for that receiver, but my coach has miraculously changed my mind and I want to call DPI. Place the ball where it was caught(since thats where the foul occured) and award them the first down they already achieved through the pass." Are you happy now? hEaDbAnG

I had a first for me last night - a fkin coach hugged me. We had a big upset and the winning team had to kneel one more time and I was at their sideline as they are congregating to rush the field - I told one of the coaches that I wasn't going to be happy if his team ran my BUTT over.

Next thing I know, he wraps me up. It was a little uncomfortable.

"Come on coach, you know better than that."

"You right dog, sorry about that."

Coach: I can't believe you didn't call that pass interference!  You should've called pass interference! Why didn't you call that OBVOUS pass interference?!?!?

HL: Coach, it was a running play.

Coach: I guess that's why you guys get the big bucks!

Last Friday night - 3rd and 20-something to go. Runner tackled at the LOS and gets hit late, too.

^flag

Coach: What's the flag?
Me: Personal foul. Late hit on their #78. We'll tack 15 on from the end of the run and you'll get to replay 3rd down.
Coach: Isn't that an automatic 1st down?
Me: No sir.
Coach: Why not?
Me: The rule doesn't include an automatic first down for a late hit.
Coach: Well, it should! Will you make that suggestion for next year?

Both of us: LOL

Middle school ball, last game of the season, about 3 weeks ago.

Home team receiver peels back and even hesitates to make a beautiful block on B's side at the shoulder, springing the runner for a long gain down my sideline.  Visiting staff goes ape poop, thinking I've missed a BIB.

"How can that not be a block in the back?"
"Because it was at the side, Coach."
"No it wasn't"
"Coach, I watched the entire block, it was beautiful"
"If the angle of attack begins from behind, it HAS to be a block in the back!"

Later- visitor's receiver goes across the middle for a catch, home LB gets his hands all up around the helmet but doesn't grasp the mask or an opening during the tackle.

"How could you not call that facemask?"
"Because there wasn't one."
"His hand went inside the mask."
"He didn't grab it, Coach"
"Anytime the hand goes across the mask, its at LEAST a 5 yard penalty!"

Texas high school game in late October:  During the return of a free kick, two of the B players block an A player about 10 yards out of bounds.  I throw my flag.  As I am reporting the flag to the R, the Team B coaches are yelling, "That block can't be illegal, they were out of bounds!".

Early in the 1st Quarter of a late season game, I'm HL on red sideline. Red QB throws a screen pass that is caught by the receiver and proceeds to run towards and down my sideline. I take off in pursuit but I have to run well onto the field to avoid players and coaches who have stepped up to the sideline whilst screaming encouragement.
As I run past I drop my flag and after the play I go to the R and tell him the story. R announced the penalty and as I resume the sideline the coach says "Don't we get a warning ?"

"Too many players on the line" from an undefeated team playing another undefeated team AND they had a referee on the coaching staff.  There were other eroneous requests which I think came from the "ref" on the coaching staff.

First scrimmage of the year a couple of weeks ago.   Home team scores and we go to put the ball down for try.   The mark is on the 4 yard line.   After the play, I ask the head coach why and he says that one of his assistants told him the rule had been changed a couple of years ago and they were supposed to be doing the try from the four so he moved it.
