Working WH a 12 yr old game today. First round of the playoffs. Pretty tightly matched game. A leading 13-7. 22 seconds to go in the game, ball on B 20. I inform the coach that he doesn't even need to run another play- clock will run out. Coach calls time out. He wants to score again. Calls for the hook and ladder. The pass is intercepted, and run back for a touchdown. Try is good. Final score 14-13.
Now coach, explain to the kids why their season is over.

If they are 12 years old, I think they understand that already without explanation

If I had a dollar for every DUMB coaching decision I've seen made by a youth coach...

... you'd have a dollar.
I'd be content with a nickel, and be pretty well-off with just a penny, for each...

LOL LOL LOL LOL
Says it all, gotta love youth coaches

Here's a question for you all regarding this situation. Do you/have you/would you become hard of hearing in that situation, and not grant the timeout?
Outside of the sportsmanship issue (which is sorely lacking in these contests) of the coach trying to rub it in, a lot of stupid things happen on these types of plays that could lead to injury, personal fouls etc. Since one of our primary responsibilities as officials is to ensure player safety, should we have just swallowed the whistle, and while saving the coach from himself, also save the players from a potential injury by letting the clock run out?
-
Not me. I don't interject myself into the game in that manner.
-
Me either. For all I know he might be wanting to get some younger players in the game to keep Momma and Daddy happy.

I would grant the coach his timeout, even as foolish as this one seems. A lot of youth coaches have huge egos. This one is no exception. He reaps what he sows. I feel bad for the players. They won their game but the coach lost it for them.
