Title: Stupid announcer tricks...
Post by: RMR on October 17, 2012, 12:02:18 AM
If you were watching the game you will know what I mean.

Andre Ware is an idiot and Dave Neal isn't far behind him.

USL @ North Texas...

North Texas scored a TD at the end of the game that got called back becuause they were in an illegal formation, with 5 players in the backfield.

Andre gripes about it and starts circling guys to illustrate his point. He circles the QB (1) a couple of running backs (2&3), and a flanker to the QB's right (4) and then ignores another flanker who is to the QB's left (5) while saying "I only see 4."

Then he goes back to it with a couple of different angles and says "Well they called it on the left tackle, but it looks like he's on the line to me. That's being called way too tight. That's about as on the line of scrimmage as you can get" While circling the tackle and completely ignoring the flanker immediately to the left of the tackle that he correctly pointed out is on the line of scrimmage.

Dave missed the guy as well, both times they illustrated this supposed error that was "too touchy."

Unbelieveable.

So my wife comes in here to see why I am yelling at the TV and I rewind the film, she has no idea what the situation was and I pause on the play and say "tell me what's wrong here on this play."

She says, "That's an illegal formation, they have 5 men in the backfield."

Reply from my wife would be 'Downton Abbey is on and you won't vacate the couch."

Sounds like he was intentionally omitting the 5th flanker to make his point. Politicians excel at that type of denial.

Probably didn't understand someone outside could be a back.

It's been that way for years.

Probably didn't understand someone outside could be a back.

It wasn't that - he correctly identified a player in an almost identical position at the other end of the line as a back.

He was QB, shouldn't he know what a legal formation looks like?

And then Dave Neal brings up how, "until a couple of years ago, the tackles would line up three yards off the line of scrimmage in pass protections, but they are stricter about that now."

I can't stand when announcers dog the officials for a bad call when they dont know the rules. Here in a great example:

During an Ole Miss game on ESPN, Ole Miss was flagged for Ineligible Receiver downfield. When I watched the replay, sure enough, there was a covered receiver on the right side in the slot position. The announcer was yelling how it was a bad call because he didn't see a covered tight end and was completely ignoring the covered man in the slot. I too was yelling at the TV for the announcer to back to formation school!

Once again, I make the point that I should be approached by major TV outlets as a colour commentator. Hell, I know the rules. I know sports. I've done radio, I've done play-by-play for hockey.

Maybe you all should lobby to get me a cushy high-paying job. :)

Could I do any worse than the current crop of no-minds who clearly haven't ever cracked a rule book in their lives?

Why crack a rule book?  They already know all the rules anyhow, don't they?

Let's add Chris Collinsworth(less) to the ring of dishonor.  The guy knows the rules from a player's perspective, which is often skewed, and spews ignorance on a weekly basis.
And don't leave out Brad Mustardburger.  Saturdays aren't saturdays without his ignorance gracing your living room airwaves.
Which is the reason I mostly watch football games on mute, or find a (increasingly hard to find) good radio announcer, where they don't have time to gripe about the calls.
