Title: Alternate officials for playoffs
Post by: golfingref on November 25, 2012, 04:38:47 PM
Do your state associations have AOs available during playoff games? We had an official go down Friday night during a quarterfinal game. Had to finish the last quarter + 8 minutes doing 4 man mechanics. Just curious what other states do and if the AO is compensated.

In Texas it is up to the local chapters. In my chapter we send an alternate for the Regionals, Quarter Finals and Semi-Finals. Chapter pays him $100. Alternate is sent for the Championships and the State pays.

If there is an official ECO, they can be utilized as an alternate, if the WH desires.  When we use 7 man, we would just rotate to 6 man mechanics.

All playoffs in my Section (Sac-Joaquin in Central California) have an alternate assigned. They receive $60 for game.

We started sending alternates this year for the Amarillo Chapter.  They are unpaid unless the crew pitches in a few dollars a piece.

Since playoff games are so limited in our area, it's a good way to get more people involved in the post season.

I would figure that, at least in the playoffs, the chain crews are usually officials that one of them should step in should a crewman go down.

For FL:
If an association places a registered ECO on a playoff crew as exclusive ECO, that association must also provide an additional alternate field official. The alternate field official will be paid by that alternate’s association.
Interesting though, I didnt read anywhere as to the procedure if someone goes down & the ECO is NOT a dedicated ECO....  I suppose the ECO replaces the official & either do the clock on the field or get a guy off the street to do ECO.

Only for the State Finals are the chain guys officials - and as far as I know they are not paid

In Arkansas, play off chain crews are the same good ol' boys that have been working the chains for '30 years' at the same school.

Chain crews during our playoffs are the same crews used during the year. Not sure about the Section Championships which are played at a neutral site. I will be the umpire  sNiCkErS for the Division 1 Section Championship game this Friday. Hope we have a good chain crew and clock operator.
