Now that football officials have pretty much all swapped to black pants, what colour towel are Umpires using in bad conditions to wipe down the football? Still using white towels or have folks swapped to "matching" black towels?

I have seen both. Best guess: if you see white, it came from the school and if its black the U bought it himself.
Our U in the state final used a black, Nike player towel.
One other note- one of the questions asked in the NFHS rule questionaire of proposed rule changes was in "favor of /not in favor of eliminating the color restriction to white ONLY.

A black towel looks a lot better, but sometimes "any port in a storm" is necessary. Thankfully we're not restricted to color as the players are.

I switched to black when we switched to the black pants.

Black towel certainly looks better - in my opinion.

I would say black is best. I did have an umpire on another crew I was a member that used a black towel even when we wore knickers. He said that with the white towel as the game progressed, the dirt/mud would show up on the towel and coaches would complain that the ball was not clean. When he switched to a black towel there were no complaints.

If you have it, go black. Looks a lot better.
