Why I love football

With some much of the news about high school football being bad, I thought we needed a good story.

California is experiencing an unprecedented wildfire season this year. Some games were cancelled or postponed. Here is a great story about one of local teams doing everything they can to support one of the effected communities.

AMADOR COUNTY, Calif. (KCRA) —It's been a hard week for Amador and Calaveras counties. The Butte Fire destroyed more than hundred homes, left thousands without power and canceled school, including Friday's Amador and Capital Christian high school football game.

The game was rescheduled for Monday.

Capital Christian fans traded in their royal blue for navy blue and are sitting on Amador's side, helping cheer on the team.

Ticket and concession sales are all being donated to the victims of the Butte Fire.

"We're a Christian school. We're putting ourselves out there and we need to walk the walk if we're gonna talk the talk," said Capital Christian supporter, Jeff Olsen.

The coaches are old friends and said the solidarity is a great lesson for the players.

"We want to teach kids how to live life first and this is real life stuff that's going on," said Capital Christian coach Phil Grams.

"Community here's been fantastic. And I know our community will be very thankful for whatever they can donate to us," said Amador coach Bill Baker.

But on the field, the players didn't hold back.

Monday's generosity will be taken back to to help the victims.

"We're just overwhelmed," said Amador captain Reese Gilmore. "We're so excited. We actually wrote something for them. We're going to express our gratitude to them later today."

The school raised $8,000 that will be donated to the fire victims.

Capital Christian won the game, 51-27.

Gotta love how football is always a great community uniter that never fails to brighten up a bad situation. Such it was for my family this past weekend; my grandmother had a massive stroke, and being at a game never fails to take my mind off things for at least a little while.
