Very sad event in Sacramento tonight. 5 members of the Grant High School football team left school to go get some food prior to their pregame. While stopped at an intersection, someone shot into the vehicle striking two of the players, killing one of them. Their playoff game was cancelled. We are not sure if it will be rescheduled or if the team will forfeit. Grant High School is the number 1 seed in Division 2 of the section and would likely have won tonight. Very sad. I worked the game at the school closest to Grant. Many of the players knew the player that was killed. The mood before the game was pretty somber before the game. Never seen so many police officers at a game but I was definitely glad to have them there. No problems at our game Thank God.
Grant High School is in a rough neighborhood. For many in the community Friday Night football is the biggest event in the week. I like working their games. They have a great crowd and some of the best hecklers in the area. I like a good joke at my expense coming from the stands. Usually get at least one every time I work one of their games. There coach really works hard to keep these kids from taking the wrong path and has good success in getting players to Div 1 colleges. Not sure of all the numbers but they have sent quite a few players to the NFL.
Totally sucks.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —A 16-year-old Grant Union High School football was killed and another was injured in a shooting not far from campus Friday, Sacramento police said.
The shooting happened just before 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Mabel Street and Silver Eagle Road. When a vehicle with five teenagers stopped at the intersection, someone, or people, fired multiple shots into the vehicle. The driver and passenger were hit.
Police said it is unknown if the shooter(s), who left the scene, were on foot or in a vehicle.
The driver suffered critical injuries and the passenger had non-life threatening injuries. Police said one of the other passengers put the driver in the back seat and drove to the high school. There, Grant staff members helped the students and called emergency officials, Twin Rivers School District officials said.
The 16-year-old was taken to the hospital, where he later died, police said.
The other victim was taken to the hospital by a passerby who was hailed by the other passengers, police said.
No other information about the victims was released.
Police said a specific motive behind the shooting is unknown; no arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
"At this point there's no indication that there's any type of altercation that led up to this event," Sacramento Police Sgt. Bryce Heinlein said. "This does not look like it was provoked by any means, but its also very early in this investigation."
Friday night's football game between Grant and Beyer High School of Modesto was immediately canceled after reports of the shooting. The game had been scheduled for 7 p.m.
At Inderkum High School, family and friends mourned for the teen.
"It's really sad," Inderkum High School Football Head Coach Terry Stark said. "A lot of our (football players) have grown up with [the victims], gone to the same schools, played under the same teams."
"I'm playing for my cousin, JJ.," Inderkum High School running back Jimmie Johnson said. Heard about him today. He'd say, but, 'We gotta finish it man.' We gonna play for you man. Prayers to you and your family."
At Grant High School, classmates created a sidewalk memorial with candles to remember their friend.
