And once we again we are left to wonder why..if it is true that crew do a better job, that in this game (and even in many post season college games), why are the games are worked by folks from different crews.

Part of the reason might be "eligibility." One might be the number of years an official has been in the league; required to have worked "x" number of preliminary rounds, etc.

Rulesman is correct.  Some crews have ineligible officials.  Ineligibility can be based on amount of service, ratings, or how long ago it has been since an official worked .  Nobody is going to work two in a row.

Moreover, the philosophy is to take the top officials from each position.  You can strive to be the best umpire but if the SJ on your crew is ineligible based on experience, why punish the umpire?

Then why have crews at all?

Because most crews would be incomplete anyway?  Because figuring out scheduling 112 officials for 17 weeks is easier if you tie them all to one guy in a group of 7?  Because they have a union that collectively bargained the method they use?

I recall that about ten years or so back, they changed their policy on playoff appointments from all-stars to crews on much the grounds Mike's arguing.  Immediately the arguments start from the other direction, "you need the best officials on the best games!" "this guy's crew is fine but Johnny Sidejudge shouldn't be there!" "why should the best head linesman in the league miss out because his field judge honked a few bad ones in Week 6?"

Didn't take them too long to switch back to all-stars.

They pair weaker and newer officials with the more talented stronger guys to form the best 17 crews that they can for week to week.  Not like they can hide a weak crew every week with Lions @ Browns.

Standard in the industry.

Interestingly rookies in the playing teams do qualify for the Super Bowl :)

Standard in the industry.

So why is the question asked why not full regular season crews when they are not the best or most worthy.

It's called Supervisor's prerogative.

You advocate the crews built upon all the 1s together, all the 17s together for crews built upon performance and those top crew work playoffs?  I'd rather see the crew mixed with lesser officials with stronger officials, then reward individuals per performance.

I don't disagree. I'm just offering the possible real life perspective.

So which regular season crews are the "superior" crews?

I've no idea.  My understanding is there is an eligible pool of several officials for each position in the post season.  Based on factors, I.e. The #1 U may not be in the Super Bowl because he has already worked it in a recent season, so your all star crew may be a mixture of 1-2-3- or even 4's.  If my memory is correct the Super Bowl crew will come from the divisional round group.  I know the WH's are.

I don't think they issue a rating externally of crew rankings.
