Surgery recovery in time for season
« on: May 26, 2017, 04:32:22 PM »
So I found out today that the cause of all my recent pain is a hernia, and I'm more than likely going to have surgery. I just wondered if there's anybody else on this board who's gone through it, and if the recovery time will allow me to take the field this season.

Robotic repair June 20th, I was running within 2 weeks, full speed prior to the start of the season.
Likely depends on what shape you're in now.

Yep, went through it last year.  I had a sports hernia where they repaired with mesh.  Doctor told me to take it easy for about 5 days (I forget the actual number), then he started me with some exercises.  He told me "balls to the wall" (his words) in 14 days.  I worked an entire quarter at a clinic about 3 weeks after my procedure.  I wouldn't have recommended an entire game though.  I'd give it at least 5 weeks before trying to work a full game.  Let your body tell you when it's OK.  Good luck.

Had an inguinal hernia repaired with mesh 3 years ago about the same timeframe.  I was back up to speed wayyy in time for pre-season scrimmages.  Think it took me about 2 weeks to start running again; I waited a month or so to start adding weight training though, since that's more strain on the mesh.
