S/B Weekly Quiz 2
« on: September 11, 2020, 01:49:25 PM »
1.  4/4 @ B-48. Punter A99 kicks the ball high and it is caught by B21 at the B-10. The receiving team had two #15’s on the field during the play.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, 1/10, B-43, snap (25)
Illegal numbering. The 5-yard penalty is enforced at the previous spot, giving Team A a new series. Due to the legal kick down the game clock will next start on the snap, and the play clock is set to 25 seconds and starts on the referee's signal.

2.  2/10 @ B-30.  The game clock is running with 15 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter when the ball is snapped.  Team A trails by four points and is out of time outs.  Team A has five players in the backfield at the snap and A41 catches a swing pass and runs to the B-27 where he is tackled.  When the ball is dead, the game clock is stopped with 8 seconds remaining.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, 2/15, B-35, RFP (no play clock).
The illegal formation foul is enforced at the previous spot, and the down is repeated. Since Team A is behind in score, there is no option to start the clock on the snap, and there is no option for a ten-second subtraction. The game clock will start on the referee's signal, and there is no play clock, since the remaining game time is less than 25 seconds.

3.  2/6 @ B-25.  A17’s forward pass is intercepted by B44 at the B-1.  B44 returns the interception to the B-3 where he is hit and fumbles.  B54 recovers the fumble at the B-2 and his original momentum takes him into the end zone.  B54 is immediately tackled in his own end zone.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
B, Free Kick, B-20, F/K timing rules (25).
Momentum does not apply to a recovery of a teammates fumble; thus, the result of the down is a safety, 2 points for Team A.

4.  In the 1st possession series of the 5th overtime, the score is tied A35-B35. Running back A28 fumbles at the B-4 and the loose ball is recovered in the end zone by A88.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
B, 1/G, B-3, no clock (25)
This is a special down that follows Try rules, including the Try fumble rule. Since a player other than the fumbler recovered the ball in advance of the spot of the fumble, the ball is returned to the spot of the fumble, making this an unsuccessful attempt to score a 2-point touchdown, and the down is over. Team B now gets their opportunity to score a 2-point touchdown from the B-3. There is no game clock, and the play clock is set to 25 and starts on the referee's signal.

5.  4/10 @ A-45. Team A’s windblown scrimmage kick is on its downward flight at Team B’s 30-yard line. B18, starting at the 20-yard line, must detour around A92 at the 25-yard line to attempt to make the catch at the 30-yard line. At the last moment, B18 pulls up near the downward flight of the ball and does not make the catch.  The ball is declared dead at the B-20.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
B, 1/10, B-40, snap (25).
By the description, B18 was in position to make the catch, even though he had to detour around A92. This is foul by A92 for kick-catch interference (KCI). The 15-yard KCI penalty can only be enforced at the spot of the foul, taking the ball to the B-40. Due to the legal kick down the game clock will next start on the snap, and the play clock is set to 25 seconds and starts on the referee's signal.
(P.S. I wish they would distinguish between a punt and a field goal attempt, since both are "scrimmage kicks." Yeah, I know. From their own 45 and into the wind, this ain't likely to be a FG attempt. But it makes a difference when discussing rules.)

6.  4/10 @ A-35.  Punt receiver B22 is at the B-30 awaiting the punt as it makes its downward flight and his teammate B88 is three yards in front of him at the B-33. Down field to cover the kick, A44 legally blocks B88 into B22 just as the ball reaches him. The ball hits B22 in the shoulder and bounces away. Team A recovers at the B-25.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A,1/10, B-25, snap (25)
There is no foul on this down, and Team A's recovery is legal, since the kicked ball had touched a Team B player. (Note: This is not forced touching.) Due to the legal kick down the game clock will next start on the snap, and the play clock is set to 25 seconds and starts on the referee's signal.

7.  1/10 @ B-24. QB A12 attempts a pass to A89 who is very near the goal line.  B41 is in coverage and attempts to block A89 from seeing the ball by facing A89 and extending his arms over his head.  B41 never turns to see the ball but does not contact A89. The catchable pass falls incomplete.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, 2/10, B-24, snap (40 secs. & running)
There is no foul on this down. (There must be physical contact to have pass interference.) Due to the incomplete pass, the game clock will next start on the snap, and the play clock is set to 40 seconds and starts when the ball is declared dead on the previous down.

8.  2/10 @ A-25.  Early in the 3rd quarter, runner A44 turns the corner and is out of bounds at the A-40.  Clearly after the play, Tight end A80 blocks B21 hard at the A-38.
RULING: ______________│______________│______________│______________
A, 1/10, A-25, ready (25).
Team A had reached  the line-to-gain at the end of the down. The late hit foul is penalized from the dead-ball spot, and the new series for Team A is established after the penalty is enforced. Since this down was in the third period, the game clock will start on the referee's signal, and, due to the completion of the penalty, the play clock is set  to 25 secs. and will start on the referee's signal.
