  • The rules are there if you need them.
The verdict is in

Snodgrass confirmed that there should not have been a 10-second subtraction. He also comments about a possible pull and shoot action, and a potential leaping action by BYU.
Sad. But 1) the rules are so darned complex today, and 2) the Command centers do not appear to be more expert than the on-field officials.
Kinda glad I’m not in that circus any more.

I still do not have an answer to unsportsmanlike foul, an official moved the ball from the 49 to the 34 then R ruled 4th quarter over with NO MENTION OF THE FOUL. Never seen anything like this with no explanation.

Because you're confusing plays.  The UNS was after the fumble recovery which was overturned to an incomplete pass with 15 seconds on the clock.  (We've really gone way to far on the philosophy of a receiver in the area; this should be grounding and the philosophies should be updated to make it grounding.)  Then they ran two plays (a spike and a throw out of bounds) and then they attempted to kick on third down when the clock stopped with 6 seconds left.

This is an actual rule that was added to a few years ago to specifically address replay overturns. I don’t think you can extrapolate it to cover other situations. I could certainly be wrong but that is how I would officiate it.

Based on Snodgrass' video, I think you're right. I still think it is something that could potentially cause confusion, and should be clarified in the rules.

  • Without officials... it is only recess.

The Big 12 has had a rough few weeks with instant replay  Now an advance of the football and touchdown was awarded after a fumble prior to the play being declared dead.  This was Arizona State vs BYU.

Was discussing this with some other officials - I think they correctly identified the issue, in that they said (paraphrasing) that it's real easy to get into "groupthink" and just assume that what you're being told, or what someone says, is accurate and correct.

That's a difficult bubble to break out of. That said, I have seen an RO stop the game to discuss an on-field penalty enforcement with the R - he believed they were enforcing from the wrong spot, and when the R came over, he he realized that the hold occurred during the kick, therefore enforced from the end of the kick, not the end of the run. Was a brainfart moment, but it happens, but at least he was willing to say "this doesn't seem right" and he spoke up.
