From San Antonio Express News:

Central Catholic coach caught behind Antonian bench

Coach standing behind Apaches asked to leave.

Central Catholic defensive coordinator John Jennings was asked to leave Antonian's game against St. Anthony on Friday when he was spotted standing behind the Apaches' bench.

Antonian officials confiscated notes Jennings took during the game, and coach Van Fuschak said the school will file an official complaint with TAPPS District 2-I officials today.

“In 36 years of coaching, I never would have thought of doing something like that,” Fuschak said.

Antonian athletic director Devlyn Lovell said he approached Jennings shortly before halftime of the Apaches' 56-6 victory against St. Anthony.

Jennings eventually identified himself as a Central Catholic coach and was asked to leave. Other Buttons coaches were at Antonian's game, but Lovell said Jennings was the only one seen behind the Apaches' bench.

“This is something we're going to figure out as a district,” Lovell said. “But behind the bench is a pretty sacred area for a team.”

Jennings did not travel with the Buttons for their game at Brownsville St. Joseph on Saturday. Central (3-3, 0-2 District 2-I) lost 35-28 when the Buttons gave up 28 points in the fourth quarter.

Central and Antonian (3-2, 1-0) face each other this week, at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Antonian.

The Buttons have a 36-2 lead in the series against Antonian, with the Apaches' last victory coming in 2004.

Central Catholic principal Eddie Ybarra said he discussed the situation with Antonian principal Gilbert Saenz. Ybarra said immediate action was taken, and Central officials are continuing to investigate the incident.

Buttons coach Chris Roberts had no comment on Sunday. Roberts, who is in his first season as head coach, hired Jennings from Nacogdoches, where he was defensive coordinator in 2010.

How did he manage to wander over there? Small field with lax security? Dressed up as a mascot? Hot dog vendor?

They knew something was wrong with this guy when the wing did not have to shoo him back from the restricted area! pi1eOn

Update..from San Antonio Express News

Before they play each other this week, Central Catholic and Antonian's rivalry is moving to a conference room.

A hearing is scheduled for today after Antonian officials accused a Central Catholic coach of a rules violation when he was asked to leave the sidelines at the Apaches' game on Friday.

Antonian officials said they have film of Central Catholic defensive coordinator John Jennings “among our players” during their win over St. Anthony. They will show the tape at a TAPPS District 2-I hearing a day after filing an official complaint.

“We have him on video right there, behind the bench,” Antonian coach Van Fuschak said. “He could hear anything and everything we said. To have the audacity to be down on the field where we're coaching, it's unbelievable.”

The controversy has become a fiery topic with Central and Antonian facing each other at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Antonian.

Jennings, who has been suspended indefinitely, maintains that he didn't do anything wrong.

He said he was on Antonian's sidelines wearing a Central Catholic shirt but stayed away from any area that could be considered the Apaches' bench.

Jennings did not travel with the Buttons to Saturday's game at Brownsville St. Joseph and was sent home shortly after he showed up at the school on Monday for practice.

“Bring it on,” Jennings said. “They don't have tape of me behind the bench because I was never behind the bench. That's a completely false allegation.”

Jennings was confronted by Antonian athletic director Devlyn Lovell outside Antonian's stadium at halftime of Friday's game, and Lovell confiscated notes Jennings took.

“He was among our players at one point,” Lovell said. “The tape is conclusive.”

Buttons coach Chris Roberts met with principal Eddie Ybarra and school president Peter Pontolillo for more than an hour on Monday, a meeting that lasted well into the team's practice.

Ybarra and athletic director Carlos Enrico watched Antonian's tape, but neither had any comment on what they saw.

“We're still looking into the matter,” Ybarra said. “There are allegations that he's among Antonian players, and I've seen the tape, but I won't confirm them. We're still investigating, and I'm going to make sure all the facts are lined up first.”

Central (3-3, 0-2 TAPPS 2-I) has lost three straight. Without Jennings at their game last Saturday, the Buttons gave up 28 points in the fourth quarter of a 35-28 loss.

Central has a 36-2 all-time advantage against Antonian (3-2, 1-0) in the rivalry.

Roberts is in his first season as a head coach. Jennings, who was defensive coordinator at Nacogdoches in 2010, was among the assistants Roberts hired. Roberts, who attended the Antonian game and sat in the stands, repeatedly defended Jennings on Monday.

“I've seen the tape, and he isn't behind the bench,” Roberts said. “He's standing on the sidelines, where you often see media and coaches stand. The stadium does not have areas for coaches who are scouting, and this is an event that's been overblown.”

I was wondering the same thing.  How did that conversation go?

AD - Who are you?  Give me that?

Coach - Oh, ok sure.

I'm thinking it didnt quite work like that.

Looks like he's on the 24 yard line and beyond the limit lines (such as there are).  He's not in the team area, clearly complying with the letter of the rule, if not the spirit of it.

-10 points for dressing in BLUE CLOTHES too. If you're going to do something like this, at least make it look like you BELONG there so there's less chance you actually get caught.
