injury timeout

Is it correct to stop the clock for a player to put on his shoe or tie it? I don't consider this an injury and a team could control the clock at crunch time if allowed.

Under NCAA rules it is appropriate to do so if they have requested a charged team timeout for it

due to player safety, most all white hats I work with will kill the clock and instruct the player to fix his issue immediately or leave the field.

If we have to stop the clock to deal with a player's equipment issue, the player must exit the field for one play. Just like injury or a helmet coming off. If they can take care of the issue without a stoppage (tying a shoe, snapping a chin strap), we allow them to stay.

Rule 3-5-2b gives guidance here...allow the player time to put the shoe back on and/or tie it.  No need to send the player off.

Maybe I should have been more clear. If fixing the equipment is going to create a delay then we send them off to fix it. If it is snapping a chin strap or quickly tying a shoe, then we allow it. The key is not to delay the game.
