We had a lively discussion about this during our meeting this week and I wanted to see what others thought as well. I have 3 different scenarios. I will let you know how our discussions went but I wanted to see if anyone else had any thoughts.
Team A scrimmage kick crosses the neutral zone. It is muffed by B17 at the B-17. B17 dives and bats the ball at the B-4 towards his own goal line:
Scenario 1 - the ball goes out of bounds at the 4 inch line (literally just to the field side of the pylon).
Scenario 2 - the ball goes out of the back/side of the end zone.
Scenario 3 - the ball comes to rest in the end zone and (3A) Team A falls on it or (3B) team B falls on it.
Scenario 4 - Lets say there is NO BAT, the ball just rolls into the end zone and either Team A or B falls on it (so, just the original muff by B17).
Here is what we came up with:
Scenario 1 -> This actually happened. I put the ball at the 1 going out, Team B's ball.
Scenario 2 -> We discussed this as a safety. Even though it is still a kick, according to 8-7-2 batting applies new impetus to the ball. The Bat is the reason it is out of the back of the end zone, therefore it is a Safety because Team B batted it.
Scenario 3 -> Because of the batting changing the impetus (8-7-2), if Team A recovers it- Touchdown, if Team B recovers it, Safety.
Scenario 4 -> Touchback/Touchdown depending on if B/A recovers it.
So, that is what we discussed. Thoughts/opinions/comments?
