I just completed my first game
« on: September 04, 2015, 06:30:25 PM »
Hey all!

I'm new to this site and new to football officiating. I have done baseball for 7 years and basketball for 2 years.
I just did my first football game here in Nebraska - it was a junior high game (3 officials). I was the umpire and my main job was to spot the ball. It went well with no issues. But I wanted to get some advice from you guys.

I feel like I'm a long ways from being head linesman. What do I need to do in order to feel more comfortable? How long does it take to work from being the umpire to head linesman? My next game is scheduled for next week. I don't think I will do any high school games this season and I don't have a rulebook. Looking forward to what you guys have to say!

Where we are you start on the LOS. Three man crews we use R and 2 wings. R is pretty busy.

There is no prerequisite to be an HL over any other position.  However, in my experience, most new officials begin at LJ as that position has a bit less administrative duties compared to the other 3 positions one would work at the lower levels.

I assume that your 3 man mechanic uses R-U-H?

Interesting question you had asked.  When I first started my question would have been when do they let you work umpire?  The youth association I worked for put everyone on the wings their first year.  I'd say try to work anywhere.  I would even recommend you contact your local high school association.  They'll only put you in freshman and jv games anyway and you will get training there too.  I wish I had done that.  I worked one year of youth football before applying to the high school program and it was a world of difference in my 2nd season working both (I learned a TON).  If you are young and think you might want to excel in football you definitely should start HS now too.  I worked 7 years of high school before moving to NCAA and it took me another 6 years to make it to D-I.  I'm NEVER an advocate of moving up to fast but working high school freshman wouldn't qualify as such in my opinion.  You basically get two years experience in one year.  What you really need is snaps snaps snaps.  Get as many as possible.  Good luck.

Sounds like you enjoyed the experience, I hope so.  I suspect your experience in both Basketball and baseball taught you a lot of people EXPECT you to know everything IMMEDIATELY, and you've learned knowing what you need takes time (and mistakes).  There's no alternative to learning the rules, which ONLY happens over time.

As best you can, focus and learn the position you're assigned to, and as much as possible observe what your crew mates do to handle their position.  3 man assignments worked fairly well 40+ years ago, but the game has changed dramatically since then (at any level).  Although you're working with 3, spectators, and many coaches, will hold you responsible for seeing everything the 7 or 8 men see on TV.  Like basketball and baseball, that's just part of the gig, and your diplomatic experience should serve you well.

3 man mechanics is exactly like driving a car with 3 wheels, it's possible but usually very bumpy.  R-U-L is the traditional formation, but many have switched to R-L-J, to compensate for that previously open sideline in today's wider game.  It's still only 3 wheels no matter where you place them.

Don't be impatient, focus on the game and the more snaps you see, the slower things seem and the more detail you'll be able to see.  Hang on, it's a great ride that only gets better.

Congratulations and welcome!  In our association 3 man mechanics are R-H-L.  Typically rookies start either position on the line of scrimmage.  We give them 3 things to concentrate on in their first couple games:

1. Learn to spot forward progress.  This is the number one thing for a wing to do and the faster you get good at it the easier it becomes to work on the other things you need to.
2. Don't blow your whistle unless you see the runner down with the ball in their possession.  We try to have only one whistle blown on a play.
3. Call fouls that you know you see.  If you're not sure what a foul is don't call it.  If you're not sure what you saw don't call a foul because it didn't look right.

With all that said, we have some rookies who will work R with experienced officials on the wings.  The guys who know their stuff are there for a safety net and can make sure nothing is enforced incorrectly.  After all it's just another position with a bit of administrative responsibility.

Whether your working youth ball or  9th grade and  JV, when you work with guys who are on Varsity crews  ask for feedback and listen to them.  I personally think you learn more on  9th grade games than youth games, but you get to see snaps in the youth games and practice what you've learned.

Nothing special about working H over L other than you are responsible for making sure the chains are in the right spot and don't move until you need them to.

Also: buy the rule book and start reading. You can either get the hard copy or an e-book is available from Amazon or Apple.

Yes. I was assigned umpire and the R told me after the game that I'm not ready for Head Linesman yet. But the next game I have scheduled I am assigned Head Linesman for a Junior High game.

Thanks for the welcome and information everyone. I'm sure I will have more questions. I'm ready and willing to learn more.

Indeed it does not...  Search "NFHS football rule book 2015" on Amazon and you should find the kindle edition.

Well whatever you position you work, get snaps, as many as you can.  The more plays you see, the more improvement you will make.  Try to get to games you aren't assigned and shadow the assigned officials.

Hey all!

I don't have a rulebook.

Just out of interest, do you guys need to take a competency exam before you can take the field (both rules and mechanics)?

For High School here, it's a rule exam. I'm doing middle school just to get my feet wet. I'd like to try HS at some point, but I don't know if he will let me without taking the exam.

My assigner does all three sports and I do basketball and baseball with him, so I decided to try football.

I asked him before the season if I needed to register and take the exam for High School and he said no. I have glanced at the rule book online, but I need to definitely start reading more. I did go to one rules meeting, but my head was spinning.

Sounds as if things work a little differently in your area.  Here in NC you have to be registered with the state to work any level of interscholastic sports.  One would need to to at least be registered with a local assigner to get youth level games.

In so far as football goes, we all take the NFHS exam online here.

The rulebook can be a bit hard to digest at first.  I always suggest using the Redding's Guide to NFHS rules as it breaks down the rulebook and rewords things to make them easier to understand.  It also has quizzes you can take to improve your knowledge.  I would also look in to joining the USA Football online courses.  Their website has some resources that a new official an use.  Finally, if you are obtaining a set of NFHS rules, make sure it has the Simplified and Illustrated version with it.

In my area, if you're going to work middle school and below, the exam is highly encouraged but not explicitly required. You do get odd looks and people probably won't think you're too serious about advancing if you don't attempt it, however.

JV and Varsity requires the exam and a minimum score, which you probably know.

In Germany you are not allowed to work on the field without passing the exam (and for our new  z^ :attend two weekend courses). I suppose the exam is the relevant part for all of Europe. Roger and Kalle could correct me if needed ...

I all but insist the new official do HL. I tell first year guys that that's the position they need to volunteer for as soon as they get to the field. They need to learn to multi-task and you don't learn much in this business except by doing it. For a JH level game, they can handle it -- especially someone with other officiating experience. I worked probably 60+% HL my first year.

You need to learn how to deal with a chain crew, what to be thinking about when a play goes close to 10 yards or more, etc. I think of a LJ as more of an assistant R -- he needs to be the R's eyes downfield and let him know what's going on. The LJ is the most important position on the field (IMO) and requires a great deal of experience to master. But I don't want a LJ who isn't already pretty good at HL, even at a lower level.

In Britain we have the following before we take the field/qualify:

"You will be assigned a trainer based local to you. Your trainer will go through the rookie manual with you and cover various topics. In general this takes around 6 to 9 hours, and can be run in a single day or split over multiple sessions. How you run these session(s) will be decided between you and your trainer.

Once you have satisfactorily gone through the rookie training (i.e. you are happy with the concepts presented) you need to take and pass the basic competency exam. This is a true/ false, open book exam (the rules and mechanics you need are actually given in the questions). The purpose of this exam is NOT to test your rules knowledge but to demonstrate you have understood the basic concepts presented to you. After you pass this your status is upgraded to "Competent", i.e. you are competent to go out and work games. Passing this exam ensures that you are fully covered by insurance to officiate football in Britain.

When you feel ready we will then get you out on the field. How we manage this first game depends on the individual. However in general we try and assign an extra experienced official to the game, who will stand behind you and buddy up with you. This person will usually be your trainer.

Once you've done ten games satisfactorily, you are upgraded to "Qualified" member status! "

While I think that rookies need to get to HL soon, I really think that that they should work a couple of games at LJ first.  Let them get used to getting forward progress, and all the other basics, and get used to officiating in general, before they have to start worrying about managing a chain crew on top of it (especially for JV games, where the chain crews are likely less than top-notch).  After 2 or 3 games, THEN throw them into the fire.

JMHO.

I would recommend you volunteer to work chains at the high school games. That will give you the chance to get up close to a H. It will also give you the practical knowledge of the chains and down box.   Which is the big difference between The L & H.
