Unform change question
« on: February 04, 2011, 07:03:23 AM »
I saw the "goodbye to knickers" thread.  Of course I'll wait until I hear from my conference supevisor to make it official in my mind.  What I'd like to know is whether anyone knows if there will be a "warm weather version" of the black pants where perhaps the material is different.

I'd bet on it, if not this season, certainly next season.

I agree.  For the number of pants that will be bought, you know they can come up with a warm weather type in the next 4-5 months.

I agree with this.  There was at least one supervisor that wouldn't allow the black pants last season.

Still don't understand this move, since the 2" stripe shirt was supposed to set NCAA apart from from HS and NFL.

That said, heard on good authority that the decision on black pants was based assurances from suppliers that a warm weather version would be available.

The move was made due to the preference of officials that wore them. A strong, if not overwhelming, majority said they would like to wear them full-time. At least one - probably more - coordinator has been wanting to lose the knickers for years, so he at least supported it, if not inititated it.

Word on the street is that the Cliff Keen and Gerry Davis pants are made of a lighter material than the Honigs.

Anyone know if the NFL is going this route as well? Normally, a move this big doesn't happen in a vacuum.

UFL guys have had the black pants since the league's inception. Anyone know what they are made of?

Nothing at all against the NFL - they have provided a lot of good info, training, and resources to NCAA guys in the past couple of decades - but it will be nice to be the leader for a change, eh?

Brings me to another question. May seem trite, but what do we about bean bags? If the NFL had black pants full time, I'd bet they'd change to black bean bags. All NCAA ought to use the same color. Blue or black - which will it be? White is passe, and will clash. Orange and red are silly.  I think black. The sooner we stir this pot, the sooner we get resolution.

Big 12 already has the black beanbags. They fit in the best but might look like crap if they get muddy.

Let's make the penalty flags black, too and complete the motif.

Where is this nonsense taking us, now we  should be concerned about our beanbags "clashing".  Does anybody really think the color of the beanbag matters to anyone but the game officials, and whether or not they can see it and find after it's been left.  The insistance on using a separate blue beanbag, was silly.

The most common sense I've read all evening. Concerns about beanbag and flag colours clashing with the colour of our pants - seriously? We're hardly wearing catwalk outfits - last time I checked we were wearing polyester, not a traditional Haute couture material...

Next, we will have folks suggesting that the NCAA and NFHS hire Yves Saint Laurent to advise on our colour choices.

And don't be surprised if more all official surveys come forth on a variety of subjects like the rule change one.  Our new national coordinator believes in inclusiveness and is interested in our views coming direct as well as through coordinators/supervisors.

I don't know which is scarier...that an official knows who this is or that an official knows he is dead.

Stirrups are back in!  Give it a few more years and we'll have everyone in bow ties and the H carrying a stick.
