Signal 7 Dead Ball

Anyone have some 411 on why Signal 7 has been dropped from SOME penalty statements but not ALL penalty statements involving dead ball fouls?

Removed from:  Delaying start of a half, dead ball substitution fouls, putting ball in play before it is ready, pre-snap procedural fouls by Team B, positioning self on a teammate presnap.   That is just a quick look, there may be others

well, I haven't given the dead ball signal for these and false starts for years - I'm not a big believer in unncessary signals.

What do you use as the determining factor for when it will or will not be used?

I guess all I can say is I don't use it on obvious pre-snap type fouls - never really thought about it that much.  I sometimes (if I remember) say "prior to the snap" on FSTs when the ball is snapped, and I think I do give the DB signal then.  I will use it for late hits, UNCs etc. and usually say "After the play.........."

I only use it when it is important to let the crowd know that there was 'no play' or that something occurred after the play so the down will count.

My hunch is it was an oversight. It won't be used anymore for pre-snap fouls. "Prior to snap" verbiage also deleted unless it's necessary to inform that there was no play. Signal and verbiage will still be used for fouls after the play.

I'm pretty sure I heard something about this at a clinic.  I think Terry McAuley or an official from the Big East said that it slows down the announcement.  I guess it is officially dropped.
