Why would a restraining line plane need to extend beyond the sidelines?

K/O, A-35. A1 kicks the ball from a tee into the air. The ball has not touched the ground, and has crossed the sideline at the A-43, and is over out-of-bounds territory at the A-44 when A2, with his feet inbounds, reaches over the sideline and bats the ball back into the field of play, landing at the A-42, where A3 recovers the ball. No player of Team B was in position to catch the ball.

Ruling: Illegal touching by A2 (and A3). B, 1/10, A-42.

Without this language, it would be possible to interpret the rule to mean that illegal touching only applied over territory in the field of play.

How about Rule 6:

ARTICLE 3. a. No Team A player may touch a free-kicked ball until after:
3. It touches any player, the ground, an official or anything beyond Team B’s restraining line.

Following a pooch free kick from the A-30, A-86 who is running down the sideline inbounds, reaches out of bounds across the sideline and recovers the airborne free kick with no B players in the area just beyond the A-40 yard line.  What do we have?

Ah, the old trick question. You can't "recover" a ball that is airborne.  ;D

But, if he "caught" the ball, that would be a legal catch, and the ball would be dead and belong to A at that spot.

So what circumstance had them kicking off at the A-30?  >:D

RULE 6 - Kicks / SECTION 1. Free Kicks / Restraining Lines
ARTICLE 1. For any free kick formation, the kicking team’s restraining line shall be the yard line through the most forward point from which the ball shall be kicked, and the receiving team’s restraining line shall be the yard line 10 yards beyond that point. Unless relocated by a penalty, the kicking team’s restraining line on a kickoff shall be its 30-yard line, and for a free kick after a safety, its 20-yard line.

In the last sentence of Article 1, delete “30” and replace with “35.”

Correction noted.  My book is crossed out and annotated with a "40" for MA-HS so I overlooked this year's college change.
