Anyone else ever wear a GPS while Officiating
« on: December 02, 2013, 12:10:17 AM »
I wore my GPS watch a couple times this year. I found that during JV I move about 2-3 miles and during varsity I move 3-4 miles. This means on a Friday doing both games I move 5-7 miles and I usually working as the U. I think that back judge probably moves a whole lot more.

Any one else ever do this. Just trying to validate my numbers. I will be using this info during the off season to develop a work out schedule. I plan on adding some additional running this year trying to get up to 5 miles as a long run.

I received a FitBit for Father's Day this year and have worn it for all my games this fall. As a H in five man, i am putting anywhere from 4-5 miles per game. The steps really add up on those games with lots of TDs as I am making the 60+ yard jog back to midfield!

Now if what that GPS is telling you what your "mileage" truly is in working a football game, then that is, indeed, rather remarkable. I'd really love to know what basketball officials log in on their games using both two-man as well as three-man mechanics.

And getting back to football, I'd love to see what the "mileage ratios" would be in the various mechanic schemes, and also by position on, say, a normal 3, 4, 5, or 7 man crew. Those stats should be absolutely enlightening!

Which would greatly provide fuel for fodder for my crew to literally jump my backside for being in what they feel is the most "under worked of all positions" that there is, that namely being R!   z^

I have tracked this for a copy of years, and your numbers are accurate.  Somewhere between 4 and 5 miles for a varsity game depending on position.  There was actually a article in Referee Mag about 4 years ago on this.  I think the typical 5 man numbers were something like BJ - 4.7 miles, HL/LJ - 4.5 miles, R - 4.2 miles and U -4 miles.

I wore one for the first time this year.  My average as a U was 4.12 miles per game.  The highest was 4.95 miles and lowest was 3.46.  I tend to move more than most Us going outside the hashes to help get the ball in. The biggest impact seemed to be the amount of passing and number of scoring plays.  Each scoring play was a 50+ yard jog down the sideline.  The low was a game that finished right at 2 hours and had 2 running teams.

My college average was 5.29 miles.  The highest was 5.83 miles.  That makes sense since the game is 25% longer.

I tracked my games this year (NCAA) ... As an umpire, I would start it at the 60 min mark before the game started and stop it at the end of the game. In the 12 games I worked this year, the shortest distance I went was 7.93 miles and the longest I went was 10.43 miles.  The average I went was a little over 9 miles.  The games where both teams huddled, I went the shorter distances and the no huddle spread teams were the ones with the longer distances.

Using commercial GPS for measuring walking/running, especially with intervals of standing still, will not result in accurate measurements. Most commercial receivers are 10 meter accuracy with 4 satellites in view, less with less sats in view. Generally, GPS odometers give readings on the high side of reality.

I understand accuracy is an issue with any recreational gps. I am just using it to get an idea of how much movement occurs on the field. And since my numbers are similar to others' numbers and the differences between game length (JV vs V vs College) seem to coincide with the distances I believe the numbers I and others get can be used to a guideline for my off season work out program.

I know some of my soccer referee buddies wear one during soccer matches.  I don't own one so I never know how far I run. Which might be good. It would show how lazy I am.  :D

Several years ago, I wore an old fashioned pedometer for a three game sub varsity set and also for a varsity game. Just about the same results posted by others.

I've worn a standard pedometer on and off over the last few years, and have found my numbers roughly coincide with DallasLJ's post.  4.5 miles, give or take - about .3 over when I work B, and about .3 under when I work R.

I wore a pedometer for a season in basketball a few years ago and averaged about 7-8 miles a game...all using 3-person mechanics.  Since football lasts 3+ hours and I'm just as tired or more...I always presumed it was similar.

I always thought a GPS system told ya' how to git someplace, not how far you traveled to git there ???. I've had fans yell : "Hey, ref, you don't know if you're coming or going >:D". That may mean I need one of them there Fancy gizmo's.....just as long as it doesn't tell me (or anyone else) how fast I'm going, 'spect it would be OK. Ain't sure I want a satelite watching me ,though :!#.
