Local news story highlights questionable call
« on: December 06, 2013, 06:21:46 PM »
Not sure whether to put this in general or NFHS, but this is totally low class, by the coach of the losing team, by the dad, and by the news station for running it. Had this been in a college or NFL game, it goes to replay. Who knows if the call is confirmed, stands, or is overturned. It is that close. If it goes the other way, does the other team file such a complaint? Judge for yourself.

Goes to show that coaches ratings are basically garbage.  So glad we don't work under that system.

Slow news day at KATV I guess.  Their first inclination to ignore it was the better idea.  The video proved nothing, the still photo really isn't good evidence and the dad...well his opinion is like, well, you know.

Sour grapes, will soon be forgotten.

It never ceases to amaze me that folks standing somewhere other than ON the goal line think they have a better look than those looking right down Broadway. Obviously, this includes coaches, mommas, daddys and common-taters.

..."in favor of a rule that would require all five officials to come to a consensus on such an important call."

Yeah, that's just what I want -- three officials that had absolutely NO view of the GL or the ball putting in their two cent's worth.      ^talk

I wish that website had a chance for people to post opinions.  First, it annoys the hell out of me when they want know where an official lives immediately when something doesn't go their way.  Secondly, the player turned his body so the one wing couldn't have seen the ball.  It just shows that people have zero clue what they are talking about to suggest all 5 officials should have an opportunity to weight in.  I wonder how the back judge on the endline can see that penetration and the referee 11 yards behind the QB having an idea as well.  I enjoy watching ignorance of how these experts can make things better.

Both of these! If I'm the white hat in this situation. If my wing says the try is good, it's good, nothing else to discuss. Let's go home.

Accolades to the assignor(s) that put that crew back on the field for the championship. IMHO, the problem of replays AT ANY LEVEL is that you never see the play from the eyes of the official making the call. The game is played by humans, coached by humans, cheered by humans and should be officiated by humans. With all the fancy "zoom in", "freeze frame", "slo-mo'" options that are available from camaras from the top of the stadium or hanging out of a blimp is necessary to get the call right, so be it --- but not our level. I saw no proof whatsoever that the officials got the call wrong, just that it was so close the fancy stuff couldn't tell, but the officials covering the game could and ruled on it deadhorse:. The  P_S P_S P_S P_S P_S standing on the goal lime were out of position --- they should be preparing the control of the tailgate area.

The assignment came from the state office. You can thank him personally when the rules committee meets next month.

I'll keep that in mind when I see Don Brodell. Those in that capasity often try to show that they aren't listening to all the crap flying from fans / parents / coaches and the like.

Ah, reality, such is the life of a Football Official. If frequent affirmation of a job being well done, or appreciation for what we add to the game we work is necessary to satisfy your self respect, very, very likely football officiating is not the wisest choice you can make.

The only affirmation you are likely to receive is an occassional, unspoken nod from a coach suggesting either, "glad to see it's you" on the way into the playing field, or another unspoked nod, suggesting, "nice job" on the way out.

Hopefully, you might expect similar unspoken looks, or maybe brief comments from crew mates after a game you've just worked, but crew mates can be a tough audience, and they expect quality work as part of the assignment, so we shouldn't feel slighted by any lack of compliments.  To the wing official who made the call, it's not that big a deal, he saw what happened and ruled accordingly.  The fact the call decided the game doesn't change what he saw, one way of the other.

The opposite wing official understands, it is what it is.  That his opposite signalled TD simply advises he saw what he needed to see to rule the way he ruled.  Sometimes both wing officials see the score, sometimes only one has the view, it only takes one, and unless you saw something contradictory, for absolute sure, before his whistle sounded, there's really no need to mention it.

You shower, you dress, hopefully you stop for some refreshments together and focus on those things that maybe some of you might do, just a bit better (faster, smoother) that none on the people doing all the barking even have a clue about. Hopefully when all is said and done, you still feel good about the job you did, and you can go home smiling, a somewhat unique, unspoken smile of satisfaction.

That's as good as it gets, ever.

If there was a "Best Of" here, this post would certainly be worthy of inclusion.
