The question was, Auburn returns down the Bama sideline instead of Auburn's. just as Davis clears the last Bama defender, a player runs out from the bench and tackles the Auburn player. What is the ruling?

I go to the old, no penalty awards unescorted points. So, the worst penalty, USC, automatic ejection of the offending illegal participant, fifteen yards from the end of the run and one untamed down. Oh, and award the USC to the Head Coach.

The question was if the Officials would award a TD I keep reminding them of the playback where the Auburn Linebacker comes close to getting tangled up with Davis from the 10 yard line in. You never know what can happen.

Rule 9-2-3-a makes clear that folks on the sideline may not interfere with anyone, especially not the runner - and the rule states that the referee may assess any penalty he deems equitable, explicitly including an awarded score.

My opinion is that this should be a severe penalty. No matter where the next defender is, award the score and eject the offender.

If the interference is with another player, not the runner, then you might consider a 15-yarder.
