Even if you aren't an Auburn fan - say what you want about Gus - this is a pretty good read. The Book of Malzahn

There is nothing at all artificial about any of it; he is really a first-class act. Those of us who frequent this forum (there are many) who have had the good fortune to work for him and the other high school and college coaches mentioned can relate to everything written. Lots of good memories here.

My favorite story about his attention to detail is the Shiloh semi-final playoff game at Barton one year when it rained cats and dogs for a week and the field was 2 feet deep in mud goal line to goal line. Gus brings 40 brand new footballs so his QB is assured of having a dry one to throw. I would not have believed it had I not seen it myself. Of course, Shiloh Christian was one of the few places in the world that could afford to sacrifice 40 new footballs to the elements.

Interesting, though, that two things weren't mentioned: (1) West Memphis turned him down for that first job because they were hiring for an offensive position and didn't feel he was "offense-minded" enough, and (2) he was inducted into the Arkansas High School Coaches Hall of Fame last July.
"Gentlemen, we are going to relentlessly chase perfection, knowing full well we will not catch it, because nothing is perfect. But we are going to relentlessly chase it, because in the process we will catch excellence. I am not remotely interested in just being good."

this is a man that eats at the Waffle House after a home game. Is deeply moved by the fan support. Auburn Fans met in mass to welcome the team back from Pasadena. Gus wiped a tear from his eye on entering the practice facility.

John Heismann, in his letter to Auburn on his departure wrote about the family, spirit and love that is Auburn. Keep in mind that Auburn is the only school John Heismann coached at that has won the Heismann. There are three standing in the football facility.

Good story about Gus Malzahn. It's a bit wordy, but not many people knew all that background about his coaching in Arkansas. Things had to have been going bad between Houston Nutt and him for Malzahn to resign from Arkansas to go across the Oklahoma border to Tulsa. Todd Graham may have saved his coaching career. Glad to have him back in Auburn.
