Said to my then-5 year old daughter: "No, Daddy's car doesn't get <local top 40 station> on the radio."

Doesn't work any more, though.

The play-by-play guys don't bother me. It is the officials that don't know the rules that can be a problem.

That's why it's best to team them with more experienced and rules knowledgeable crew mates who are willing to share their acquired knowledge

That works great if the one who doesn't know the rules is willing to take guidance from one that does.  Unfortunately, some of the former are the guys who've "been doing this 25 years" (though in truth, they have one year of experience 25 times) and won't listen to a younger crewmate. :sTiR:

It can be a hard lesson to accept, but often the primary reason people ignore or reject our advice, is that it's not presented well enough to be convincing.  Of course that depends A LOT, on how much the recipient is WILLING TO LISTEN.

Several years ago, driving back from the Chick Filet Bowl in Atlanta, listening to the Outback Bowl and trying to get through Tampa before they were done. Kickoff to Georgia, Return man misjudged the kickoff catches the ball over his shoulder at the one, goes in the endzone and out on the sideline. Official bags it at the one and stops the clock. Jack Harris, local morning drive in host is screaming for a safety and does not let up. A week later I met him at a benefit and asked if anyone had explained the rule. "That was a bad call by the officials." Several people were listening to this conversation "Jack, I had a lot of bad things I was screaming at the radio" "Oh? You agree with me then?" "No, I was screaming about you!" Then went on to explain the momentum rule. "Do you have any old rule books?" "Do you really want to learn all that stuff? You'd just use it to level a table leg." We laughed about it.

Sorry to drag an old one up but...
As I was cleaning up after a game, I had the Cincinnati- Temple game on the radio, there was a flag for a chop block. You could hear the R announce the foul and the players numbers. The common-tator said it's not often the officials get two players on a chop block.

  • Without officials... it is only recess.

Sadly, they aren't wrong....

What? They sure as heck are wrong. Chop block is a 2-player foul and those announcers are clueless.

More often than not, when a ref has a mic and announces the numbers, I only hear one. I've also seen many training videos that emphasize "You really need to get both numbers here!"

In reality, in chop block situations where there is a delay in the second block, the first block may not be illegal until the second player makes contact. A chop block is a combination block. I believe that's how the common-taters are coming up with that. For once, I can see their reasoning.

We have an Umpire, former FSU Linebacker whose story line in new official's training is priceless. His playing career extensive.
